PC Running slow
I play the online game Second Life, and often while playing, the game freezes intermittently, sometimes for minutes at a time. If i then quit the game, which can take varying amounts of time, as not only is the game itself affected, but my PC in general, my PC runs really slowly, for varying amounts of time. If i reboot the PC, which again can take varying amounts of time, once it took well over an hour to reboot, even after the reboot the computer still runs slowly for a varying amount of time, but then usually normal speed is resumed..until the next time it happens. i would be very grateful if anyone could give some kind of indication what might be happening. The only thing i personally can come up with is some kind of memory problem?

Thanx for any help that anyone might be able to offer

Hello superdriver. Welcome to TSG,

Sounds like you may be infected with Malware, have you tried scanning your computer?

If not, try running both of these:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5756

SUPERAntiSpyware:
http://majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html

Make sure you update both of them before running a scan.

Download HijackThis 2.0.3.

When it has been downoaded and installed click on "Do a system scan only".

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Copy and paste the entire log in your next reply.

I see nothing scary. If you open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Dlt), is your CPU usage high?

It would be helpful if you tell me if you have a high CPU usage as Chipzzz suggested. A high CPU usage results in a slow computer.

You seem to have a few startup objects. These can slow your computer down but I can help you trim them down and it's very easy to do.

I'll get back to you ASAP to tell you which startup objects you can uncheck.

Depends on your gigahertz on your computer but i see avg running on your computer. AVG normally lags your whole system when doing scans and updates.

My PC is running perfectly again this morning, after a period of three days running slowly. I have no idea why it has recovered its performance, its nothing that i have done. CPU usage while playing Second Life is around 12 or 13%. The specs of my pc are 2.4 ghz quad core Q6600, 3gb Ram, 750gb hard drive, NVidia GeForce 8600GT 512mb.

Click Start > Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Remove the checkmark from:

Ad-Watch

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher

HostManager

HP Software Update

IAAnotif

KBD

OsdMaestro

RtHDVCpl

0228e555-4f9c-4e35-a3ec-b109a192b4c2
(leave this checked if you want GMail to notify you when you have a new e-mail message)

AVG8_TRAY

hpsysdrv
(you may want to leave this checked as it makes certain components stop working)

QuickTime Task

CurseClient

EA Core

ehTray.exe

FreeRAMXP

Google Update

Steam

Adobe Gamma Loader

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Restart your computer .
When the SCU box appears after restarting, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in the box and then click OK.

After you've done that, tell me how things are with the system.
Post a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Close all other windows and rescan with HijackThis. Place a checkmark in the following entries and then click on "Fix Checked".

Hi again...i did as you suggested, and the pc was running fine, booting and closing down really quickly, and seemed stable. However, this morning when i first used it, it ran fine, but then when i used it again a couple of hours later, it booted a little slower than normal, and since then has been back to running really slowly. I have also had the blue screen telling me a fault has been detected, and the machine was being shut down to protect the system. I am at a loss to know what could be wrong..but i'm starting to think it is a hardware problem, maybe Ram?
