Hello,

I Changed a *.BMP file extension and name to hide it somewhere in my comp' (win 7) and now I can't find it .
Is there a software that finds files with fake extension name?
(Hope it's the easy type to answer )

Yep...... that's the problem I don't remember either

I figured that if there is a program that can detect files by content and not ext'
that would help me very much.

any search function will look for context text. Problem is is that a .bmp is a bitmap file, or image file.

if you can't remember part of the name or the extension, chances are high that you are going to have to remember where you put it.

so, it means that I'm s#*^@d, god, I was sure that there is software that can help sort and detect the real content

not if it's an image file, as that's not going to be in any context that humans recognize. Is it a true image file, or did you rename it from something that contains text?

No such thing as a fake file extension. You can give a file any extension you want and still have it open with any program you want.

On Unix based systems they really don't care what the file extension is. They also have a command called FILE that will tell you what type of file a file is regardless of its extension. I wrote a script years ago to find executable files regardless of their file extensions.

Now I do recall actually finding a windows based utility that did this as well but I don't recall what the name of it was. I know I posted it in another forum I used to post on a lot. If I find it I will let you know. Or if I can find a version of the FILE command that works on Windows I will let you know as well.

Wow DOS command line based program, didn't mess with those since my first ""gui"" windows 3.0, your efforts are very appreciated.

I found a simple solution, just captured from google another image paste it on PB and save it to see the file size, searched comp with that size and found it ,
