Your RAM and CPU are fine for running Windows 7; the machine should run a little better than it did with Vista.
Since you're not sure about the drivers surely you are using whatever Windows found and installed. Often these are fine, but when you are having troubles, as you are, you should look for others.
On HP's web site, Support section, find the information for your exact model (if you look at my Computer specs you'll see that I have two Pavilions and they are very different). For some (very few) models there is a recommendation to update the BIOS when going to Windows 7. If there are Windows 7 drivers for your model you should download and install them, beginning with the chipset. Use the Vista drivers instead if necessary.
