Solved: Searching in Windows 8 and other questions I mostly drop a shortcut to assorted sites on my desktop and then put them in a folder in documents. I have a shortcut to that folder on my desktop and the ones I use most often are in there available as soon as I click on the shortcut, along with the less used ones which are in (sometimes nested) folders. To save me looking through all the folders, I generally just type in a keyword in the search box under the start menu (this is in Vista and 7), and up it comes. This method works well for me.
In Windows 8 however, I first have to find settings, then click on Search, and then Files. And when I search this way, it tells me nothing is found. Now I know the shortcuts are there, because I imported the folder using Dropbox (which I like better than their Skydrive by the way, since I can't do anything with whatever I put in there--no right click) and I can find the folder in Documents in 8.
So my first question is, what am I doing wrong? Am I not searching in the right place? Am I not holding my mouth the right way when I hit Enter? Surely Documents is in the Search Index? I don't want to have pages of blocks to search through, so I won't even consider adding the majority of them to the Metro screen. How do I make Search in 8 work for me? I'm not looking to add the classic menu at this stage, although I plan to dual-boot 8 with 7, and so may reconsider at that point (and assuming some kind person posts a step-by-step for dummies on how-to on install 8 as a dual-boot in the near future...).
Secondly, what's happened to Hibernate? Is this not going to be in the release version of 8? Does anyone know?
Thirdly, I haven't been able to find out much about Windows Live Mail for 8, so does anyone know whether there will still be a Feeds option in it? I prefer getting my feeds through there.
Any information and assistance gratefully received.
I'm running Windows 8 in a virtual box at present (and thanks to DoubleHelix for that), just FYI. And does anyone else feel like they're facing a wall with the Metro? It's just a solid block in front of me. I feel almost claustrophobic with it.
Thanks in advance. |
