As anyone on this forum probably knows by now, I still run Windows 95 on the same machine I ran 11 years ago.

What did I need a computer for 11 years ago? Internet browsing, word processing/spreadsheets, email. What do I need it for now? Internet browsing, word processing/spreadsheets, email.

My ancient machine is a wonderful personal TOOL for me. If there is something I did without it that long ago I get along without it now. Newer NTFS viruses can't and won't run on the DOS-based 95 and 98. Virus writers don't waste their time developing because we are in "the minority". Why do you think Mac has been so successful against viruses? They are in the minority.

As for me, I run the original--AOL 2.5 (!), Office 4.3 Pro ('94)--No problems here. The only changes over this time period are are IE 5.5, LavaSoft, ZoneAlarm, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster.

Windows 98 was a decent release but seeing on friend's computers, too bloated for me.

Heck, I use Bank of America and their web site requires Windows 95 with IE 5.0.

2.99 GB Quantum Fireball, state of the art in '96

Flash drive? How? I don't have USB ports. I don't mind because I email files to myself or on FTP. You can get on a PC practically anywhere nowadays. No thumb drives to lose or identities to be stolen.

I use Limewire to download MP3's to hard drive. MP3's are usually 3-4MB, minus my 700MB WIN95 directory, so about 2300MB's or 500 songs.

Just face it: I'm happily in denial.

Many recent programs may not be compatible with Windows 98 or 95. Make a compromise and use Windows 2000. It is still supported by most software companies and is very good.

I bought 2000 Pro a couple of years back when M$ stopped updating 98SE. Installed it and updated it and that's about all. If you can stand the bloat you might as well get XP.

wow, that's about the first time i've heard a statement like that,
'course, comparing to 95,
reckon i'd have to agree with you though,
.
bells-n-whistles are sometime nice though,
have a td that i 'cruise' with occasionaly,
no ps, no pb, no pw, no ac, no fm, no cd, no power-top, no cruise-control,
well i guess you get the idea,
the 'no' list is kind of lengthy,
including, no horsepower,
but then again, i'm kind of content with that,
for that vehicle anyway,
got a li'l' split-window that satisfies those other urges,
.
nice thread, keep it up,
hey, bright idea!!,
might get a moderator to move it to one of the community forums,
rename it to 'retro' or something,
.
take care,

Windows 98 with integrated Internet Explorer ("Active Desktop") is bloated compared to Windows 95. I believe the final 2.5 release of Windows 95 in 1997 contains Active Desktop with IE 4.0. It is technically impossible to remove the integration unless you use 98lite Professional, but there would probably be registry crap left behind to rear it ugly head at a later inopportune time. In fact, as I recall, this standard integration in Windows 98 got Microsoft in deep legal trouble and almost split in two firms.

My machine is a Gateway 2000 P5-133XL with 133MHz Pentium and 128MB RAM, manufacture date on back 12/29/1995. This was known as the "10th Anniversary Edition". I am 24 and when my parents bought it back then it was a blazing machine at the time, especially for 128MB RAM. They have a faster machine now and I took posssession of this several years back.

I did some research and while the June 1996 article of PC World and the 10th Anniversary Club have lambasted my type machine, I have made no hardware modifications and can say I haven't had a single failure in all these years (not even the hard disk). I have a few Gateway 2000's laying around (one a
4DX2-66 from 1993) and they have always been the best in my opinion. Surely disgruntled people will start a 'shut-me-up campaign' to get the manufacture to settle.
