Solved: Any Spyware Removal Software for 98SE?
Hi,

It's a long, sad story, but I've had to reattach my 98SE to the Internet. Are there any decent spyware removal programs still out there that will work with 98SE??? My old favorites, Counterspy, Spysweeper, Lavasoft, etc, seem only to support XP or later. Or, is 98SE so old the "bad guys" don't bother sending their infections anymore?

Any leads appreciated!

Out of date Bob

Hi!

Is SuperAntispyware for real???

I downloaded it on my Windows 98SE today, as you recommended, and it worked, finding far more bad guys than I would have expected (30 or so, including a Trojan or two).

Runs a bit slow, but this leads to thoroughness.

Encouraged, I also downloaded it to my Windows XP, and it found 146 threats! Granted, 143 of those were cookies, but one was a "minor" Trojan. This machine is routinely scrubed with Counterspy, Spysweeper and Norton.

Are they that bad, or is SuperAntispyware (free version) that good?

Hard to believe it wasn't one of those free downloads that finds "pretend" threats. I checked the Internet for reviews, and they were generally very high. Must be why you recommended it.

Now I'll try it on my Vista machine, and I'll send some money to them for the upgrade, once I figure out how to use one subscription for three machines.

Thanks again,

Bob J.

I am still using Windows Me and Superantispyware seems to most effective and it updates almost daily. I also use Spyguard.
Adaware SE and Spybot S&D do not seem to work with ME anymore.

I knew this would happen. I saw this coming, and started archiving the updates for both Ad-Aware SE and Spybot after M$ dropped 9x support in July 2006. You can find the last working update on my FTP here: Ad-Aware SE Definitions: 13-May-08 (~3.15MB, ~12 min 33.6K)

You will find that as time goes on, these systems are less susceptible to malware. Did you know that NT/2000/XP viruses will fail to install and/or run on a DOS/9x platform?

As far as Spybot, the 1.3 version supports Windows 95/98, the 1.4 only Windows 98, and 1.5 brought back Windows 95 compatibility. Because of this, it appears likely that an effort is being made to preserve compatibility with older legacy systems. I do know that the update feature within the console seems quirky; you can download and install the updates but it still appears on the update list when you search for updates. To work around this you can download the complete update file (~2.5MB, ~10 min 33.6K) from my FTP Spybot S&D Definitions: 25-Jun-08 or directly from the Spybot website here.

The updates are fully compatible across the Spybot line (Spybot 1.3 from 2004 through 1.5 in 2008). I mention this because 1.3 is a much faster beast than 1.5, especially on <133MHz systems.

SDFOX 7,

Ad-Aware SE updates will end later in the year. But they still make the updates and def files for people who have the paid versions. They can still work but guess they added something in the check for update or the newer def file that checks to see if you got the free version and then you get a bad update.
Don't know why they are being this way. They say to upgrade away fro SE but for use with 98 and ME the newer Ad-Aware will not work so we can not upgrade.

On my computer Spybot 1.3 was fast too and Spybot 1.4 was very very slow and had lots of bugs. Spybot 1.5 all seems to be about the same as Spybot 1.3 for speed. Spybot 1.5.2 is better. Does take longer to Immunize but there are so much more that it protects you on. Now I only have the Immunize protection on IE that I don't use. No protection on Mozilla or do I use the Hosts file. These things really slowed down firefox and are not needed or needed by me because I got my own hosts files and WinPatrol etc to protect me.

Good thing you can download the updates for Spybot 1.3 without using the updater because that I think is the only way you can get the updates and soon that may stop.
