Question Printer driver for Win 98SE needed
A friend of mine has just bought a Canon ip1800 printer, at my suggestion.
When I put in the software CD it told me the operating system was wrong. I then realised that her IBM notebook was using Win 98SE. Evidently the ip 1800 software supplied needs XP.

Now, she only uses her PC for e-mails and doesn't need to upgrade to XP, which would cost at least twice as much as the printer. Is there any possibility of finding a driver for ip 1800 that works with Win 98 ?

I have my doubts, but wondering if this may help:

Be aware though that Canon specifies Windows 2000 or higher to work with that printer.

When you plug in the printer does Windows recognize it?

Thank you, Zee, I will try the canon-europe site. I did not try to plug in the printer to see if Windows recognised it, because Canon wants you to install the software first and that's what hangs up.

Try installing the software first and test...

Zee, thank you for your quick reply but I evidently didn't make myself clear. The problem is that I can't install the software because as soon as I put in the CD it tells me it is not compatible with my op. system (Win 98SE) and that's as far as it gets. I tried the canon-europe site but they couldn't help.

If the software package didn't help (did you try it?), you're stuck.

might try going to www.driverguide.com. Site is free but you must register. You might be able to find a driver there.

Printers are especially finicky about drivers. Since the specifications for the printer do not make any mention of Windows 98, I don't expect you'll get it working. You can continue to search driver sites, but unless a person specifically wrote a driver for a new printer for an old operating system, there isn't likely going to be anything available.

I haven't seen a new printer(HP, Canon, Lexmark, Epson, etc.) on a store shelf during the last year or so that works with an operating system other than XP, 2000, or Vista.

Maybe the 98 driver for the ip1600 will work? I've found that sometimes one driver will work across multiple lines.

Hello, SDFOX 7.
Thank you for your suggestion about using the driver for ip1600. Sorry for the delay in replying, but I did try it and the ip1800 just won't connct.
