Boot up problem
I gave my old Dell 1100 to my daughter and when she tried to boot it up, the words Home Edition tile across the screen and then it goes to vertical lines across the screen. Cannot get it to do anything. Help!

Hi and welcome Xp Home Edition in the 98/ME forum!
Any changes made recently?
Try Tapping F8 at start up and choose Last Known Good Configuration.

boot up problem
I tried that nothing different happens. This is what is going on: when we turn the computer on the home edition icon comes up, now it tiles across the entire screen and is not the same logo as before, then it goes to another screen that is blue with vertical black lines that are different widths, last it goes to what looks like it is the log in page but into of sign in, it is a box with vertical lines. I even switched the monitor, thinking that maybe the monitor had gone bad, but to no avail. I have never seen anything like this and I have had years of problems with Dells.

Could well be a video card problem.
Check internal connections.
Turn the computer off and disconnect it from the power
Take off the side of the case and touch the bare metal chassis to discharge static.
Remove Ram..Video cards from their slots

Plug in the RAM [one stick at a time].
Also try different slots.
Ensure it is seated correctly.
Reseat Video card.

Check Hard drive and Motherboard connections [IDE]
Take them off and reseat them.

Inspect the case for dust etc.

Check that the processor fan rotate.
