Internal is cheaper, but you should actually consider both (i.e., two new drives! ). An external is great for off-site backup. About once a year at least, preferably more often, backup everything to it and put it offsite in case of a fire or theft of your computer. The second drive in your computer that you use for backup is for hard drive failure and that one you keep your machine backuped real time. If you want to do any video editing, you would then add a 3rd drive internal and that should be a very big drive--200 Gigs or more.

That is a good idea. I was looking at those because I have two or three old drives (20, 20, and 40 Gigs) that I don't use anymore and are just lying around. I could make portables out of 'em!

Try either newegg.com or outpost.com for the cases. I've found them as cheap as $20

Look for it in add/remove programs first. If there, uninstall, if not, have hijack this fix it.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Go here to download CCleaner.
  • Install CCleaner
  • Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the "Options" button.
  • Click "Advanced" and remove the check by "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Click OK
  • Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop.

Start CCleaner and click Run Cleaner

Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Do aPanda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido scan and Panda scans.

Defrag?
I noticed nobody mentioned that after he ran "clean disk" he should have "defragged" the drive. It rearranges and compresses all the files so it can read them "mo-betta".
I'm fairly new at troubleshooting, so I may be wrong. What do you guys think?
