several of the programs I linked to in my last post allegedly recover from chk files

you might have to run several of them as from experience some do better than others on some file types and some work better on a second or 3rd run after others have run

I have no idea why it happened in the first place but one frequent reason is a power surge or power failure & a sudden reboot & whatever was being written to the disc or in it's cache gets wasted, but there are proabably thousands of causes for such behaviour

Derek

understand what you say about the various programmes and will try as you suggest. Why I ask the question as the C:\found.000\dir0000.chk folder contains most of the missing stuff and we seem to be able to get at it without any need for other programmes you suggest, but my docs is empty. Will the programmes you suggest actually locate more than we can find by way of search or as we have searched for all .chk files and examined them is it most likely the documents are no more?

I have also made sure hidden and system files are viewable BTW.

As for why they went missing I am only twitchy on this PC as it had a new HDD replaced reluctantly by Mesh under warranty due to a major crash and wonder if they haven't really got to the bottom of what is really wrong with the machine? I understand this is an impossible question to ask but just trying to put my question and perhaps over concern into some sort of context.

Cheers again for all the help

I'll bet you are a big believer in backups now, aren't you?? Not being mean, but you've heard it a hundred times.
File settings already changed, but will see what .old search brings us.

Yes system restore got some of the things back, strangely it worked almost completely for the user profile which was active, again apart from my docs, but didn't make any difference to the state of the user profile which was logged in but not being used at the time. I hope you get my drift of this?

Also the .chk files have nothing of the files of the user who was actually using the PC at the time but most of the missing files for the user who was logged in but not using the PC. The common denominator though is the all docs in my docs have disappeared

Still we see what the suggestions bring and report back.

Appreciate it

Nothing more found I guess we are where we are and the documents are really lost, still managed to salvage quite a bit of what could have been a complete disaster. Thanks to everyone

that is one of the reasons for having agood backup strategy

unfortunately NONE of us do until it's too late Me included

I only set up a decent regular backup when I lost almost everything, like most people it was oh well it won't happen to me but it did

Too true Derek, fortunately it isn't my PC, but they do now have a back up strategy in place. Just a shame the previous horse could unbolt the stable door

Thanks again for all your help

Similar problem. Four users. Deleted one, as I could not switch users. Figured out the problem and now it's back to four. Only one is not an administrator it is guest.

When I go to one desktop there are only four icons. Recycle media and two others. No "my computer icon.
When I go to the other accounts I cannot open my computer to get at my c drive and D and E drive. I have tried all I know how and do not know what to do. I have not used that pc in months and it was like that the last time I used it. So tonight I did make progress. Also can't open my docs/
need help as I need that pc for my music.
thanks guys.

You my friend have spyware. You can always get to Explorer by right clicking the Start Button and choose explore. You need to take ownership of those files.

Thanks Jim,,
thinking it may be a bit more than that but not too serious. I used secunia and there were some spyware in there. But I had been at it for so long that I put it away for the night. I am thinking on doing a reformat after I get some files out of that as there are two computers that are going to be strictly for music. That happens to be one of them.
Thing is explorer and my computer are not on startup. I had no problem using the explorer icon from desktop. I had less pain before computers lol
thanks again.
