How do I...
... disable the XP Firewall, for a dial-up connection, that does not allow opening its' 'properties'???

I need to disable it to install DSL software, which won't install with any active Firewalls enabled on the PC.

Thanks!

If you are on XP service pack 2

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended), and then click OK.

I'll check MSKB, unless you know procedure for SP1 disable...

Windows firewall came in with SP2 so if you only have SP1 installed you don't have Windows firewall.

No, actually I am pretty sure that SP1 does have a firewall.

TRS-80 vet: Why don't you install SP2?

That's a good question, MMJ. And I don't know the answer to it either. Maybe one day, I might do those updates.

And yes, SP1 has Windows XP firewall.

Right now, however, I wish only to get the firewall disabled, which is necessary to complete DSL software installation.

If you can help with the issue at hand, I appreciate that.

Please don't offer that what is creating my problem does not exist. If you read my post, you'll see that the MSKB procedure for disabling firewall [in SP1, which I did not say explicitly], does not work.

Thanks again.

Why didn't this work?

To configure Internet Connection Firewall manually in Windows XP or Windows XP SP1:
1. Click Start, click Run, type control.exe netconnections, and then click OK.
2. Right-click the connection on which you would like to enable ICF, and then click Properties.
3. On the Advanced tab, click the box to select the option to Protect my computer or network.
4. If you want to enable the use of some applications and services through the firewall, you must enable them. To do this, click Settings, and then click to select the programs, protocols, and services that you want to enable for the ICF configuration.

When you click OK, in #1, you get the network connections window, that shows your connections - including the icon for MSN dial-up.

You (I) cannot open the 'properties' of MSN dial-up. I've seen 3 places where there's a properties, or settings for this connection. None allow access...

There is NO error message. You (one) cannot open 'properties', of MSN dial-up. Not even to disable the firewall.

It must be disabled in another manner, to complete DSL software installation. On 12/16, I can delete it in entirety. But I care not to wait until then, to install the high-speed...

I don't understand. What do you mean "On 12/16"?

What happens if you select it and press alt-enter?

1) On 12/16, my dial-up subscription expires, and I can delete the connection software in its' entirety.

2) If I select the icon for the dial-up, and press alt + enter, the same thing happens, that happens when I right click the icon, and press 'properties'...

NOTHING.

Now......
Does anyone know how to disable the XP Firewall, for a dial-up connection, that does not allow opening its' 'properties'???

I need to disable it to install DSL software, which won't install with any active Firewalls enabled on the PC.

Thanks!

TRS: I'm baffled that your dial up connection does not open it's properties. Did you make the connection, or did you use an installation CD to make the connection for your dialup?
