Yesterday, after speaking with a Dell technician to help find the solution to a very minor problem, I was instructed to try restoring my computer back to an earlier date. After doing so, some problems began to occur.

1. When I tried to use my yahoo messenger, I can not view anything in the message windows.
2. When I tried to download windows updates onto my computer, the webpage turns completly blank, and I can not view the page.
3. When I tried to restore the computer back using system restore, the application box appears but it looks as though it is not responding. (see picture below). The same goes for when I try to open my McAfee Security Center. I get the box, but it is blank. I also can not view my email.

It seems as though it could be a java script error, possibly, or of something of the like, because some links I click on that uses java will not open a new window. For instance, when I tried to use Dell's support chat, I could not access anything after clicking on the link.

Dell's technicians recommended that I reinstall the OS and drivers. But before going about that, I would like to know if there is another solution to this problem. I don't want to have to go about reinstalling all of my programs that are already on my computer.

what was the minor problem you were having??

have you tried going into safe mode and seeing what happens if you try system restore. Not sure if you can do a system restore in safe mode as I never had to but might be worth a try

I tried using Safe Mode already, and it appears the same way. It is as if something is missing on my computer now or corrupted or something. There's no way to get around it.

For instance, I can not use the smilies, bold, underline, italics, etc... in the post. Something is disabling that as well.

The minor problem was when I used ALT+CTRL+ DEL. I didn't know that there was 2 different views for that box, and I though something was wrong cause I had got stuck in one view.

I noticed that I am not the only one with this problem now, except that maybe I have a few more problems involved as well. Could this be due to a virus or something?

i was curious about the browser as i use firefox and had some weird things happen with it a while back.

I am not qualified to advise on a HJT log but i can tell you that you need to trim your start up once you get things remedied.

You might consider moving this to security forum to see if somebody there can take a look at the log. you do that by clicking on the red triangle at the top right of the post
