explorer.exe crash at startup
Hey techs,
We got the big bertha of computer problems here. It's a very wierd situation as you will soon understand. The other day I notice a slower performance in the burn speed of my CD/DVD drive, and so I shut down the computer, packed it up and came home from school thinking nothing of it. As soon as I went to turn it back on, it loaded to the user login screen, I entered my password and windows began to load my personal settings. This is where it hit the fan... The message I encountered was as follows: Windows Explorer has encountered a.... sorry for the inconvience. I clicked where it said "To see what data this error report contains" and this is what it read:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: user32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2622 Offset: 0001dad9

Also at startup, Windows Defender (WD) detects changes made to my ntuser.dat.LOG and asks if I would like to Permit the file or Deny it. Permitting the file does nothing because several seconds later the WD does the same exact thing. Denying the file (althought I'd really love to have my profile running again) does not work and WD "encountered an error: 0x80501001.

I can run limited programs through ctrl + alt + del then run new task, however I can't go to start>run because I have no desktop icons or taskbar on my screen.

If I choose not to send the error report to microsoft, explorer.exe shuts down and starts up again and the same error screen shows up. The next time I close the screen explorer.exe crashes and does not try to restart itself.

I have read hundreds of pages on this problem and problems like this. I've search the error codes I've posted here all over the place. I finally have decided to make this post because I have yet to find a problem that was described exactly as my situation. My computer has booted up normally once since about two days ago, it was awesome and I got a little excited, and then the heartbreak of the restart and no show of my desktop.

If I leave the explorer.exe error message up after it boots, the taskbar will appear and stay there until I hit "Don't Send" or whatever. During this time I can open the Start menu, I can go to control panel, and yet the things that will actually open and work is very limited. I am able to post this while on the computer I am having problems with. I can run Internet Explorer (which I thought was the problem) and Firefox (my prefered browser). I have run many system scans, such as Kaspersky online scanner, AVG scanner, RegFix, Adaware SE, and winpfind3u.exe which downloaded to my computer and I was able to extract the files but unable to retrieve them. I can not afford to lose the information in this computer, reformatting is THE last resort in my eyes.

A few things about my computer, 2.00 Gb of RAM, 2.7 ghz processor, nvidia geforce 6800 ultra. I have a maxtor 160gb external harddrive, I am a video gamer, not an internet downloader (although sometimes they trick you), I download only from a restricted hub in my community. I have experienced some BSDs (blue screen of death) prior to this happening but I did get them to stop about a month before this problem. Also one last thing, my computer has frozen while starting a video game 3 -4 times now and each time it was so bad I had to hold the power button for 10 seconds until the computer turned off. I may have varied the order in which things boot and shut down in the registry, I don't know. Anyways there is probably other information that I have not noticed or forgot to mention, but thanks to all that read this. Any help is appreciated ten fold. I know how long and involved these posts get, haha this one will be a challenge. So, let the scanning and fixing begin.

Thanks again for anything,
Steve

P.S. Take your time I'll check here everyday but I don't expect a speedy response.

Get your XP installation CD handy

When you get to the desktop with no Start Menu etc
CTRL + ALT+ DEL to open Task Manager. Go to File/New Task run and type in
explorer.exe
Hopefully that will bring back your Start Menu and Task Bar
THen Start/Run and type in
sfc /scannow (there is a space before /)
OK

If that does not work
Boot from XP CD to Recovery Console. At the c:\ prompt, exactly type the following:

expand d:\i386\user32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\user32.dll

Press enter

NOTES:
d: is drive letter for your optical drive. Your drive letter may be different.
Be sure to include _ (underscore symbol) in shell32.dl_
Put one space between _ and c:\windows\

When that's done, remove XP CD and reboot normally.
