sorry -- RF --

I tried with the E and the F drives. The I know the EHDD is working is plugged in.

I keep thinking " something is blocking me from opening up certain files, program, commands (control panel " and it seems like might be some sort of spyware -- but what do I know -- its just one of those sneaking suspicions

No problem.

start > run
Delete contents of box to the right of "open"
type: explorer.exe
Press "enter"
Does Windows Explorer open?
If so, on the left panel, do you see your external HDD?

If it is not there, you might be able to open device manager using 1 of the following methods.

start > run
Delete contents of box to the right of "open"
type: devmgmt.msc
Press "enter"

start > run
Delete contents of box to the right of "open"
type: sydm.cpl
Press "enter"

System Properties will open.
Left click the "hardware" tab
Left click the "device Manager" button.

Do you see any red circles with "x" or yellow circle with "!"?
If so, RIGHT click on the item.
Left click "properties"
What is in the "device status" area?

RE #49 -- I was able to open up with devmgmt.msc but I couldn't do anything. Even though it showed my Western Digital EHD it would only show me it's properties.

Follow d_h's instructions.
PROBABLY, right click on it.
Left click "run" or "run as administrator" or "open".

After running / opening d_h.vbs, reboot and try to get into safe mode.

What are the properties?
You are at the device manager, which is a way for Windows to display information about devices
[ usually hardware ].

#53
Try.

UPDATE: BSOD is fixed -- i found out that it was a driver for some Sony Handicam sw. It had to do with the last string of the IRQL -- 0X804EF320 and some research paid off. Close that chapter.

But...

Back to the beginning -- my orginal problem is still there : "When I try to open a folder that's located on my desktop all the icons blink and disappear from the screen for about 2 seconds (as well as the icons the system tray) then everything comes backk --but the folder etc. won't open. The same happens with clicking on My Computer when I go into the Start Menu and click on the Control Panel the same thing happens. I can open pdfs and program shortcut icons that are on the desktop."

Next move??

Thanks for the update!
Please provide a link to the site that provided the assistance.

Next move?

In normal mode, try this:
start
run
type: explorer.exe
press "enter"
Does Windows Explorer open?
Report the results.
If yes, try to copy your files of interest to your external HDD.

Boot to safe mode.
Try to open the items which, as you report, you cannot open.

"No -- explorer.exe won't open in Run"
In addition to reporting the final action, please report whether or not you received an error message.
Did the computer freeze? Did the screen blink?

Have you booted to safe mode?
