Desktop folders, My Comp, Control Panel etc won't open!
When I try to open a folder that's located on my desktop, for about 2 seconds all the icons blink and leave the screen, the system tray icons disappear and then everything comes back - but the folder won't open. The same happens with clickin on My Computer. I can open pdfs and program shortcut icons that happen to be on the desktop. Also, when I go into the Start Menu and click on the Control Panel the same thing happens. Uggh. Any clues???

Click Start, click Run, type eventvwr.msc in the Open box, and then press Enter.
Click the Application category.

Look For Recent Errors > Double Click on them > Another Windows Will open > On the Right Side use the Double Notepad icon to copy the error paste them here

I don't know if its connected but the computer always has "Automatically restart" checked under "System Failure". I have to uncheck it if I want to shut the computer down but it's always checked when I boot up.

To which service do you refer?
"I don't know if its connected but the computer always has "Automatically restart" checked under "System Failure"."

What have you found during clean boot troubleshooting?

Part of clean boot troubleshooting involves booting to safe mode. Because many services do not run in safe mode, they will be recorded in the event viewer. DCOM is 1 of those errors recorded.

From the KB D_H referenced, 310353.

"This article describes how to configure Microsoft Windows XP to start by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot.""

RF -- upon doing the clean boot do you want me to see if things are working alright? Do I need to do anything else?

I've also been getting the IRQL__NOT...etc blue screen when restarting. Let me know if you want the full STOP code thats on this page. Thanks!

Yes, please perform clean boot troubleshooting.

Yes, please provide the complete BSOD messages you receive. Please provide the circumstances; such as at which point of the boot process the BSOD appear; mode into which you are booting; other.

Upon re-starting?

Upon starting after the computer has been off for "XY" # of minutes? How long; 2, 120 minutes?

Do you receive a BSOD EVERYTIME you start / restart?

The term "blue screen of death [ BSOD ]" is used with good reason.

When did the BSOD messages begin?

To which service do you refer?
"I don't know if its connected but the computer always has "Automatically restart" checked under "System Failure"."
