Then Try Reinstalling Search Companion
Go To Start > Run > rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 srchasst.inf

One more piece of information I just learned. If I search for one letter I get a big list of files before I get error message. If I search for a file name I get error before the file is found. The time is about 2 or 3 seconds before I get error. After I click error box the desktop shuts down to wallpaper and then shows back up.

I could not find srchasst.inf. I have a srchasst.PNF When I click on it, box opens and says can't open.

While I am doing the above, I discovered while I was browsing XP CD, that the search function works fine on the CD, Does this help?

I still have the same search problem. Could it be a timing problem since it will run for a while then shuts everything down to the wallpaper and then loads desktop back.

Well you did it. It does not stop during a file search. I don't have the same search box but it works. The cute little dog is gone. Can you explain what you did?
