Solved: disappearing file extension
I do all my document scanning in M$ Office. It scans documents as a .tif file which open with M$ Office Document imaging.
However, every few weeks, the .tif file extension disappears from folder options/ file types, my scans have a generic icon and open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, which I don't like. I have to enter a new file type with a .tif extension to get my scans to open again in Document Imaging.
Does anyone know how to stop this happening?

disappearing file extension
I had a similar problem with a file extension opening with the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Seems as though the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer likes to steal back that which is thinks is it's own. Since I use a third party viewer and don't need the Windows Viewer, my only recourse was to unregister the Windows native viewer.

Start>>Run.

In Run type "regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll" without the quotes and click OK.

If someone else has another remedy for this, I'd be glad to hear it.

macker7963 & kniht, You may want to give the small "Imgeditor" program a try which is Free at the link below.

Thanks for the link Tufenuf, but it doesn't really address my main problem. I want to stop the file extension disappearing.

I Actually Don't Understand Your Problem Correctly !

Do You Mean To Say That .TIF Extension Disappears From The File Types Tab . Why Do You Need It In The First Place

All You Want To Do Is Associate .TIF Files To Open With A Different Application ? <<----- ????

Yes, it disappears from the file types tab. I need it because the MS Office scanner will only scan either a .tif file or an .mdi file and you have to have MS Office to view .mdi files. I presume if I associate .tif files to open with some other program I'll have the same problems when the extension disappears again?

Download "FileExtInfo" --> http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/fileextinfo.zip

Unzip And Run it .Then Generate The Association Report For ".TIF" And Post The Output Here !

I've produced reports for both .tiff extensions and .tif as they both disappear:

The EditFlags value for a filetype indicates a set of attributes that control the behavior of the filetype, or more specifically how the system should handle it.
An "EditFlags" value can also be defined under EACH Shell, and will override the higher EditFlag setting.

The "EditFlags" May Be A "Dword" OR A "Binary" Value
