Unhappy Windows XP install went wrong
Hi

I got a pc free from work, but they had wiped it completely blank, so i bought a windows xp home install cd and installed it. It worked ok except for one part during the "installing devices" bit it came up with some error messages saying it was unable to install them or something. The rest worked fine and it finished.

Then my pc restarted, and i got the black screen that says something about windows not shutting down properly, do you want to start in safe mode, normal mode etc. i have had this once or twice with my other pc and normally i just click start windows normally.

However, when i click on one of the modes windows restarts and the same page appears again!

i have tried all the options, with the install cd in and out of the pc but nothing works, i just keep getting the same screen

Help????

What OS was on the pc previously? How much ram does the unit have? Sounds like you are missing some drivers. Ask at work if they have a driver cd for the unit.

Or this is the reason its free...it only good for parts.

It can't be a driver issue since you're not even completing the install. I'd suspect something like a bad installation disk or bad RAM.

The exact error message would help. You need to reinstall anyway. Be sure the CD is clean.

How do you get a refund from free? You did say the computer was free from work.

The windows install disk is it a legal version or a copy?

Is the CD scratched or damaged in any way? It may be hard to get a refund if nothing is wrong with it.

You can test it with a tool from Infinadyne or use the free version of IsoBuster and choose the surface scan option in the menu to be sure the CD is readable.

http://hddguru.com/content/en/softwa...l-Format-Tool/
get this tool run it on the hdd. repartition the drive and do a normal format in the normal way during xp install. make "C" drive 20gig save the rest till windows is up and running then use the disk management in xp to partition the balance of your drive. use this for data storage and "c" for the system and program installs.

regards john (senior)

I do not recommend following johnebadbak's advice. Do not unnecessarily partition the drive. It's irrelevant to the problem you're experiencing.

It's irrelevant if you can't boot from the CD.

The install cd you have is it from another make and model of computer?

What is the make and model of this computer you got from work?
