Solved: Lost Administrator
I had a user called Administrator. All my email settings etc were on this name and I used it for everything. I read it was better not to do this so I set up a user called Hazel and meant to set it up with restricted but chose administrator privileges by mistake. When I went back to Users the Administrator user had gone. Can anyone help me with getting that back. It still exists as I can 'see' it in certain areas

I want to either move all settings from the Administrator account to the new Hazel account, or better still get the Administrator account back as this has all my settings.
Thanks in anticipation
Hazel

Welcome to TSG!

Do you have any other users on this PC?
Try booting in safe mode and see if you can see it.
You can go to Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

The user is still there. On XP when you create another user on the system the Administrator is removed from the Welcome Login Screen. If you want the administrator back on the Login screen, you can download TweakUI from the MS PowerToys website and enable the administrator on the login screen.

Thanks for the welcome

I took your suggestion and in safe mode I can see Administrator and Hazel. There is another user 'Grandchildren' but that isn't showing in safe mode. I wanted to dellete Hazel but it told me that I had to create another user wiith Admin privelidges before I could and didn;t seem to 'know' that Administrator was there ???

I have exported my email info to a pst file so at least I have that but really would like the Administrator to show - have no idea whaat to do now?

Any suggestion?

Thanks so much
Hazel

Yes, but you can access it from safe mode. A note about TweakUI, be very careful with it. Do not click or add anything you are not sure about. I messed up my machine with it.
(nothing that couldn't be fixed, but it might scare you if something happens)

If he was originally logging into the computer as Administrator he most likely has XP Pro. You can login as the Administrator in Normal mode on XP Pro.

Thanks everyone - I have XP Proffessional and used Squashmans suggestion - and it worked!
Many many thanks

All the problems I have had were caused beczuse my grandchild logged in as Administrtor as there were no other users set up. He downloaded a game and my pc was invaded even though I was running the free version od AVG. I have managed to clean the machine by downloading the latest version of the sold AVG product and apart from the problem you guys have just solved for me I am left with three radio type boxes that come up when I turn the machine on. All of them refer to a dll file which is missing. I just close them and everything seems fine. I think the three bits are left over from when the machine was invaded
