Have installed SP3 on two computers here at work and now neither will successfully complete other updates from Windows Update. Get the "install failed" error. Has anyone else experienced this or have a solution?

Why is everyone using the windows update version of windows xp service pack 3 = 67 Mb. It is sort of the wimp version, the version not anybody here like the software. I think it has made my windows xp pro run just a bit better. If anybody needs the link to download the full version here it is:

My best guess would be that unless your a Professional Web Developer, you aren't going to use most of the features offered by the IT P/D version. If the conventional Windows Update version works for the home user and means less space on the hard drive, why not use that?

it works here. after 3 days not a hitch ! feels like i still got SP2

The only difference between the IT Network Installation and the Windows Update version is the IT version includes every update since WinXP was released, meaning SP1, SP2, and all updates since SP2, plus the new features. The Windows Update version checks to see what you have installed, and only downloads the parts you are missing. The 67 MB estimate assumes you already have SP2 and all the critical updates released since SP2 was released.
If you install the WU version on a fresh install of WinXP Gold, it will be about the same size download as the IT version.

The end result will be the same no matter which version you choose to install -- WinXp Service Pack 3

Talked her through (on the phone) to getting into safe mode and doing a system restore from command prompt back to before the checkpoint for the SP3 install, and it's been working fine. She does have an Intel processor, so I'll have to go to her house and edit the registry for her, I guess.

In the meantime, I had her change the update settings from auto to "notify only." She has to have them set to auto, because she will NEVER remember (or even know how) to check for and download any updates to Windows.

I figure I'll wait a while.

For the life of me I do not understand why people would jump at the opportunity to upgrade.
There are other browsers to use if security is an issue. And when MS$$ comes out with a SP............ that should be named BETA........ IMO

It was an RC for quite a while. But when inexperienced computer users have their updates set to auto, it's not really their choice (most don't even know it happened) when Microsoft puts it in the auto download.

They are "upgraded" through their automatic Windows upates............they didn't choose to do it. I can choose, because I have mine set to just notify. Many people have neither the knowledge to pick and choose, nor the time to research it all, nor are they going to remember to check updates, if they have it set to anything other than "auto."

SP3 is unadulterated crap. It seems to work ok for some folks but for others, it's horror stories.
On my three systems, it wiped out accessability to the D-Link wireless managerand some other files disappeared. That really pissed me off but good.
Forget using restore points. It says no changes were made to your system, HA.
So I used the control panel and uninstalled SP3. That returned everything to normal.
With SP3, on boot, would only display the background wallpaper and no icons for at least three minutes. Now it boots normal with icons appearing immediately.
I know I'll be criticized for saying it but SP3 is the worse piece of malware I ever encountered. Microcrap can keep it together with Vista.
XP remains the best.
Been examining Ubuntu 8.04, I'm building up another computer and will unstall Ubuntu on that system to try it out. If it works the way some folks praise it, I'll do the switch.

BSODs i never get them

It wiped out ie7 and when i ran an AVG8 scan i got the shock of my life

WOW lotsa ill feelings about SP3, am truly sorry to hear !

i guess i'm one of the few lucky ones........my XPHSP3 runs perfect since last week's upgrade. matter of fact, even better than with SP2 >>>> it boots up 7 seconds faster ......from 45 seconds to around 38.

hope you guys eventually get it sorted out.

While I hate Microsoft, Bill Gates, and their overpriced, bloated, crappy software, it has to be questioned about the possibility of malware on these systems when SP's are installed. You really need to make sure that your system is clean of all malware by updating and running your AV software, your malware removal software, everything before you install a SP. This was the same issue with SP-2 when it came out. You have to make sure that you have programs like your AV up to date, Spybot S & D, Adaware 2007, Windows Defender, updated and do full scans to get the bad $hit out of your system first. Trend Micro's Houscall is also a great online scanner and malware removal service.

Most importrant is BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE YOU INSTALL ANYTHING MAJOR. It can be a CD-Rom, a second hard drive, an external on-line data source and you can still create system restore points.

I would still wait for SP-3. But eventually, it will be required for XP in order for other updates to be applied. If SP-3 was that bad, there would be millions and millions of computers deemed useless because of the upgrade. I don't think that is the case. While I think MS bashing is MORE than justified, and should be considered the fashionable thing to do, you can't judge the health of an entire population. (i.e People who are updating Windows XP) by visiting a hospital. (i.e the much smaller number of populations who are having trouble with the Windows XP update.)

It has to be asked, was there an external issue going into the download or install that caused the problem in the first place? Because if it was JUST Windows XP SP-3, millions of systems would be affected at the same time. I don't think that is happening.
