Unhappy Administrators Rights Denied
Hello All!

I have just registered on this website, but have lurked The Tech Support Guy Forum for years.

I have a problem that IBM or AT&T DSL cannot help me with. On my IBM R51e Laptop I have been getting denied administrator's rights. I bought this laptop on Ebay a couple of years ago and it was still under warranty. Running some of my programs, ie 'CompuPic'. I am denied access.

I have sent this PC to IBM about 3 times. It has been unsuccessful in getting this problems resolve, I have ran countless system restores on it to no avail. IBM said that this laptop was originally issued to a corporation and that I should contact who I had purchased it from.

Then I tried to get help with my AT&T DSL because I'm once again denied the privilege to download browser, anti-virus, etc. Now AT&T throws me back to IBM. I purchased an extended warranty with IBM, a glitch on their end, it's good until the year 2013. (I know the laptop or I will be dead.)

I have a desktop PC as well and made sure that the Computer Management on the Administrators Tools of Local Users and Groups are set correctly.

I have gone to START-RUN and typed in "cmp" then ENTER typed in the "net user" on the Command Prompt to see if I could locate something in my HKEYS. No luck!

As I have stated, I have lurked the TSG forum for many years due to other problems, and had them resolved with a click here and there.

I'm in hopes that someone may have the fix for me.

Sincerely,
Kat~

It might be possible, but it could depend on what the original setup policies were.

Have a look at this article >>

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

>> Are you otherwise formally acknowledged as the Administrator?

>> Does the issue only occur with specfic applications or setups?

>> Are you able to boot in Safe Mode and choose a formal Administrator account as opposed to your User Name?

I was wondering if it could an issue about process and request identity in ASP.NET on this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317012
(This is beyond my scope of comprehending this.)

Yes, I am set and acknowledged as the Administrator and can limit access to other accounts.

It applies to software programs from my ISP (AT&T Yahoo) programs and simple programs such as a photo program.

No, when I was working with an AT&T Master Tech he remotely access my computer to see if he could find any glitches. I then went into Safe Mode as you described above.

I appreciate your response Rollin' Rog. Any other information that you may suggest, I will be ever so grateful.

Respectfully,
Kat~

I'm not sure I understand your 3rd answer. Every system should have a formal Administrator account, over and above your User Name account.

Not all programs can be installed in Safe Mode, but if you haven't given the formal Admin account a shot -- you should.

Also let's create a "verbose" setup logging option

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300

If you are not comfortable in using the registry editor, you can download, unzip and run (merge) the verbose logging key I've attached.

Once created the registry key should look like my attachment.

After getting a setup error, go to Start > run, and enter: %temp%

In the temporary folder search for Msi*.log files.

Upload the most recent here as an attachment.

When I get into the HKEYS as the Administrator account, it shows "over and above my User Name".

Following the instruction on the link;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
On the Installer this is what I get:
Default REG_SZ (value not set)
Enable AdminTSRemote REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

After that I cannot find the;
Reg_SZ: Logging
Value: voicewarmupx

I'm confused as to what action I should take next.

Click Start, click Run, type eventvwr.msc in the Open box, and then press Enter.
Click the Application category.

Look For Recent Errors > Double Click on them > Another Windows Will open > On the Right Side use the Double Notepad icon to copy the error paste them here

You have to manually add the key; I can simplify it for you by supplying a registry patch.

Download, unzip and run it; confirm the merge to the registry; then verify manually that the key now has the entry.

Good afternoon Rollin' Rog,

I download the patch to add the registry key. I'm somewhat confused on how to manually merge it to the registry.

When I go to my Temp Folder I cannot locate the Msi*.log files is not showing it there

I'm sorry if I'm being a pain, but I do not understand some of these prompts and commands.

I'm trying hard to follow instructions.

Sincerely,
K~

Once the file is out of the zip container you should se a file with a registry icon.

Just double click it and accept the prompt.

Alternately you can right click on it and select "merge" from the context menu.

You should reboot afterwards.

Then only after you have tried an install again should you see an msi log in the temp cache.

>> did you try following the "devil's" instructions in post 6? That method usually works when I see folks try it, but it is a bit hard to follow I know. You have to read the instructions carefully.

>> also regarding my similar suggestion -- I don't know whether you opened the right link.

The one I gave was this, and is only a 2 step procedure.

Unhappy Still no luck.....
Good morning Rollin' Rog and devil_himself,

On the verbose logging.zip I'm now getting the following;
Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted

As instructed on post # 6, I copied and pasted the results on post # 7.

I'm so sorry to bother the two of you, but I truly do not know how to fix this. I hope I'm not driving either of you crazy.

Sincerely,
Kat

BTW would a registry cleaner program help me out with this?

Good morning devil_himself,

I have not downloaded the *SubInACL* yet because I cannot locate C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools in my C driver. I've looked in the Program Folders and have done a search for anything that may relate to that title in Windows. Can I make this a stand alone folder, or do I need any of the components in thr C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools I cannot locate?
