I removed "BAK" from those 2 files in my registry and shut off the shortcut arrows using the TweakUI software like you suggested. I also deleted the iconcache.db file and rebooted (3 times!). Nothing's working. I guess I'll have to try running a repair install with my Windows disc and hope for the best. Ugh. I can't believe I have to do this. One last question; will the Windows XP SP2 "upgrade" disc perform a repair install?

Devil Himself,
it's the icons in my C:\WINDOWS folder (eg: explorer.exe), mostly exe files, but some others as well. Like icons that should appear in message windows such as this:

plus the Windows messenger icon, and every other icon that should appear automatically when I install a new program. But here's the real kicker.....I just reinstalled my Windows SP2 upgrade disc, hoping it might fix this problem. It hasn't!! All those icons are still replaced with the genric icon. I'm at my wit's end with this. There's got to be a way of repairing it. But if Tufenuf is out of ideas, I'm not sure where to go from here.

Code:
1.	Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2.	Locate the following registry key:
        HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\IconHandler
3.	Right-click the IconHandler key, and then click Delete.

NOTE: Before you delete the folder, on the Registry menu, click Export Registry File to export a backup copy of the key to your desktop.
4.	Quit Registry Editor.
5. Reboot And Report Back

Okay. I'm going to copy/paste everything you told me here for future reference. I have enough trouble remembering where I put my keys, let alone anything that involves computer programming! You're brilliant, thanks again.
