[Solved] Disable driver auto-install
Hey guys,

Trying to install a different driver for my wifi adapter. When I uninstall the driver in device manager, it disables the USB card (internal USB wifi adapter - go figure?) and all is good. However when I run "add/remove hardware" with the intention of specifying the driver to use, it automatically installs the currently available driver.

Is there any way to disable this so I can select manually?

Thanks in advance

Welcome.. Copy or save the new driver to your desktop or documents folder. Then instead of uninstalling the existing driver in device manager choose 'update driver' instead.. Choose 'Browse' and navigate to the place where you saved the new driver and click OK.. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunatetely I'd tried that and had been unable to select the driver (Why put it on the desktop by the way?) as "update driver" said something along the lines of "a suitable driver update could not be found".

I had assumed this was because it was an older driver, therefore not an update. Are you saying this process would work with any compatible driver, regardless of age? If so, looks like my driver is a dud. If "update driver" only allows newer or improved drivers to be loaded - hopefully that can be worked around

The only reason I suggested putting it on the desktop was so you could find it easily when 'browsing' for it.. After installation of the driver the file on the desktop could then be removed. Yes the procedure will work with any compatible driver.. In this particular case 'Update' does not necessarily mean switch to a newer version, it means change to a different one. Is the one you are trying to save zipped? You may need to extract files and then navigate to the particular folder after extracting.. there may be versions for Windows 98, ME, 2000, etc and you will have to locate the proper folder after extracting.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, it seems then that the driver was incompatible (it was not zipped)
It was a driver for a specific function (monitoring more than one wireless connection) and is compatible with a number of different adapters. If "update" allows any compatible driver, then it looks like I'm out of luck with this one. Not to worry - the official driver works fine and there was only really a 50/50 chance this modified driver would work.

Thanks for the help!
