Solved: What programs do I need running in start up?
Hi!

I'm running XP Home SP3.

After installing SP3, start up is really slow!!

I understand that when running msconfig you can speed up startup by deleting certain programs that are running in the background... but which ones do I need??

Any ideas?

Kind regards,

David.

Haven't a clue as I don't know what you are running in startup.
I have 3 items in msconfig startup: AVG, WinPatrol and Spyware Terminator.
XP Pro Sp2 only.

Did you install sp3 on top of an updated sp2?

Get Quick Startup: http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.html
Go File>Export, and it'll save a list of your startups in a text file.
Post it back here, and I'll help you out.

Broni, good link. I couldn't find a simple app to get that info to post.
Was just about to suggest to write them down and type the startups out.
David, you can also google each startup executable and see what it is and if you need it.
Some are easily recognizable but some are a little cryptic.
What items you uncheck can easily be rechecked if you find out you really need it.
A reboot is required for these changes to occur.

Dell likes to load all sorts of stuff at startup.

Some that you can turn off are:

Name: igfxtray
Name: igfxhkcmd
Name: igfxpers
Name: SunJavaUpdateSched
Name: Dell QuickSet
Name: ISUSPM Startup
Name: ISUSScheduler
Name: dscactivate
Name: ECenter
Name: Adobe Reader Speed Launcher
Name: TkBellExe
Name: QuickTime Task
Name: iTunesHelper
Name: DellSupport
Name: ctfmon.exe
Name: DellSupportCenter
Name: MSMSGS

They are probably some others you can turn off, go to either of these sites for more info:

http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

http://www.lafn.org/webconnect/mento...p/PENINDEX.HTM

You could also get Startup Control Panel which is a little easier to work with than msconfig.

Also, WinPatrol is a good little free app for watching changes to your system and
has a great startup programs feature that controls what is running.
Any new computer bought loaded already will have a lot of junk you can remove.
I strip all limited time apps like Norton or Office as I wouldn;t use them anyway.
Takes time but you are on the right path.
Good luck.
