Question Items removed from startup keep coming back! Aaaagghh!!!
I am running Windows XP that came installed on my computer that was purchased new in 2003. In spite of my abusiveness, this machine has only broken down a couple of times.

I have been trying to remove a few items from the startup menu but they just keep coming back. The last thing I tried was "msconfig" to remove the unwanted startup items. The "CuperUtilities Startup Manager" program is telling me that these programs (for example that atrocious "Quicktime" qttask.exe) are still there. When I look again in "msconfig" the boxes next to these startup items are unchecked, but the Startup Manager program says that they are present even though I unchecked them in msconfig AND deleted them using Startup Manager.

What am I doing wrong? AM I doing something wrong? I notice that after I used msconfig to unload these items the computer did boot up a lot faster.

Anyway, I did do a bit of searching to see if there was already a topic like this but I must have typed in my search terms wrong because the first page was all in the "Win98" category. If there is another recent topic like this one already up, I apologize.

Thanks in advance for the help. (Nemi)

First of all, use that startup manager only and don't use msconfig at all. You should just disable the startup of those programs, but don't delete the entry because the program will just create a new one, as you have seen.

So, disable the programs that you don't want to run at startup and reboot. Then open up Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and go to the processes tab. If qttask.exe is not running then it worked. You could also check the other ones you stopped.

This is just crazy. I followed the advice here (...use that startup manager only and don't use msconfig at all. You should just disable the startup of those programs...) and disabled the programs using CuperUtilities Startup Manager.

I went back later and started the program again and THEY WERE ALL BACK. It was like I had never done anything.

So I disabled some of them again and staying in that program I clicked on "refresh". THEY ALL JUST CAME RIGHT BACK.

When I invoke msnconfig, these processes are unchecked. When I open the Task Manager and look for (for example) qttask, it's not on the list of running processes.

Ok so maybe I did succeed in getting rid of some of the unwanted processes...?

I guess I should mention that in the course of my work I periodically use a utility that was given to me by my employer that does a registry clean. When I clean out the registry which I'm supposed to do at least once a week or so, certain registry entries keep popping up regardless of whether I had tried to delete the programs/entries or not--for example, "gnotify" (the gmail notifier app). Another one is "PCDR" (that horrible "PC Doctor" scanner that I made the mistake of trying out years ago).

These things are worse than viruses! O.o

Then it's working properly, qttask is not starting up when you boot your machine. They're supposed to show up in the startup manager, just not in the task manager processes.

Don't use a registry cleaner, they can cause all sorts of problems. Do a search here on registry cleaners and read some of the threads.
