msconfig question
Under services, which services absolutely need to be started and which ones can I uncheck that are not necessary at startup?

The water is a bit murky though, as, I think that it all very much depends on what programs you use on your machine and so on.

I have these turned off with no problems . If one of them causes a problem , you can always turn it back on .

4] fast user switching
5] Human interface access devices
6] Indexing Service [ Slows the hard drive down ]..

8] Net log on [ unnecessary , unless networked on a domain
9] Net meeting remote desktop sharing [disable for extra security ]..
10] Remote desktop help session manager [disable for extra security ] ..
11 Remote procedure call Locator
12] Remote Registry [ disable for extra security ] ..
13] Routing & remote access [ disable for extra security ].
14] Server
15] SSDP Discovery Service [ this is for the utterly pointless “ Universal PnP , & leaves TCP
16] Port 5000 wide open
17] TCP/IP Net bios helper
18] Telnet [disable for extra security ]..
19] Universal Plug and Play device host
20] Upload manager
21] Wireless Zero Configuration [for wireless networks ]..
22] Workstation ..

If you want to turn off services, do them using
Start > Run > Services.msc
