oops! to late, I am doing a clean install. the cdrom is working and it seems to be going well so far with the install. So I must continue now, please stick with me in case I have anymore problems.

it sure sounds much, much better after the cleaning I gave it, before that I had never seen a computer that blew hot air out the back and sounded like a jet plane, it is running much quieter now. well see how this goes

It is . . but I like to download the newest drivers from Dell Support site when I reinstall . . puting the old drivers back on a clean install seems like taking a shower and then puting your dirty underware back on . .

Load the Chipset drivers first, then the others in any order

For a computer that had that much crud on the heat sink dirty underwear would be an improvement!

Can I down load the drivers from dell ? She gave me one disk that says drivers and utilities and it has the printer drivers etc but can't find any other drivers, it says 1 on it does that mean there is a 2nd disk for the other drivers? It says it should

To install hardware drivers from the Drivers and Utilities CD or ResourceCD:

Insert the CD into the optical drive. If you have not used the program before, you will be prompted to install it. Follow the prompts to install the Drivers and Utilities program.

In the message Welcome Dell System Owner, click the Next button.

In the Search Criteria menu, click to select your system from the System Model drop-down menu

The disk I am using doesn't say any of that but just goes throught the printer stuff, so there must be another driver disk, does anyone know?

Yes, you can download the chipset and other drivers from Dell, as simpswr suggested. From memory, I think from www.dell.com you go to home and small office computers - Support - Downloads - enter the Service Tag number. Or some approximation of that.

It says it should . . it depends on the model and age of the Dell, but typoically, there is just one drivers cd . . but if you download you do not need that.

Have you looked in Device Manager to see what all does not have drivers loaded . . depending on the age of the pc, XP may load all the drivers you need. What model is it?
