Red face Solved: Windows XP Home-SP2-Error message on a DELL Dimension 4700c
The computer was working fine I was told and then the daughter shut it down and when mom started it back up it just goes to a black screen and says

We apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

IF YOUR COMPUTER STOPPED RESPONDING , RESTARTED UNEXPECTEDLY OR WAS AUTOMATICALLY SHUT DOWN TO PROTECT YOUR FILES AND FOLDERS, CHOOSE LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATON, TO REVERT TO THE MOST RECENT SETTINGS THAT WORKED.

iF A PREVIOUS STARTUP ATTEMPT WAS INTERRUPTED DUE TO A POWER FAILURE OR BECAUSE THE POWER OR RESET BUTTON WAS PRESSED OR IF YOU AREN'T SURE WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM CHOOSE START WINDOWS NORMALLY .

sorry about the capital letters I was trying to turn around and type and the computer keeps restarting so I was typing fast so please excuse that.

You can try to start it normally or safe mode or safemode with command prompt,
or last know good configuration and it just keeps going back to that same error page. It counts down so many seconds and then keep restarting. when you try safemode it goes right to the screen with all the drivers and stuff like it is going to go but then just restarts and back to the same message.

They say it worked fine and then they shut it down and two days later went to start it and that error came up. It is a DELL Dimension 4700c thats about all I know about it. It sounds like there might be a disk in the cdrom cause it acts like it trys to start one you know how it gets real loud usually and then it starts the cd but nothing happens, it won't open and I tried the paperclip I can usually open them with that but it won't, Has anyone got any ideas on what I can try? I was hoping I could get to safemode with command prompt and get the system restore to go but can;t get anywhere. Any hellp would be appreciated.

I just got the cdrom open and there is no disk in it but boy the computer sounds like it is really racing like there is a disk in trying to startup if that helps any. Also I see no light flickering like the harddrive is doing much, you no like when it is starting the light usually flickers as it is doing stuff? I don't see a light flickering at all it that also helps?

The Dell should have come with a Diagnostics cd . . blue . . run that to test the hardware. If she cannot find the diagnostic cd, you can download one from the Dell support site

I went to dell and download the diagnostics program and put it on a cd and then realized I can't run it anyway cause the computer that isn't working can't do anything with it. I started the bad computer again and pressed the F12 button where it takes you to the boot diagnostics and started that and it has a place where you can pick certain problems to see if it can find a problem (it is diagnostics I think probably the same thing) I ran a everything under cannot boot the OS, it checked everything from memory to hard drive and much more and it all passed so I went under Abnormal Noise coming from my system and checked everything under it and it all passed I checked the cpu fan and it passed, one thing that bothers me is the computer is so loud, it sound like when a computer first starts a cd that sound (if you no what I mean) but 5 times louder. anyway the cdrom is messed up I got it open there is no cd in it but it needs a new cdrom this one the door is catching on something it doesn't want to open but anyway the diagnostices says the hard drive is good , memeory is good and eveything elese it checked, is there anything else I can try? I am not sure the cdrom would work if I were to do a clean install but I really don't want to do that if there is another way, has anyone got anymore ideas? There was something simular that happened one time a while back and dell had three different letters you would press in sequence and I thinnk it reset the ide cables or something and it worked for the computer at that time (not this computer but a different one) but I can't find the notes I had on it, does anyone know what I am taliking about? although this one has a sata hard drive. I will wait to see if someone can give me somrthing to try? Thanks

Here is the whole message again

We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully.
A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was
automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known
Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or
because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what
caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration(your most recent settings that worked)
Starts Windows Normally(HIGHLIGHTED)

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Seconds until Windows starts:27

Have you tried starting with last known good configuration?

If that does not work, you can perform a repair install to repair the system . . These are good guides to performing a repair install

I tried all the choices and they all end up b ack at the same error page, I tried starting it and tapping the F8 and brought me to a somewhat differnt page and one choice was stopping the restarting loop so then I got the blue screen of death up and had the stop error
0x00000024 (0x00190203) 0x82B92A18 0xc0000102 0x00000000

then I rebooted and it went to the same screen we have been talking about where it gives you the choice of normal start or last known good configuration etc

I looked up the stop error but it really doesn't tell me much, the only thing it mentions is somethning about the video ram and that is the only thing I did check but if it was that I would't get anything on the screen would I? I can bring diagnostics up and check the video area if you think that might do any good? Please let me know what you think if there is anything I can try and if not my last choice is a reinstall.

This is a desktop, right? Disconnect the power from the CD drive and see if you can boot.

I tried that and it brought up that it couldn't find a drive said press F1 to contiue but then took you right b ack to the error message, HOWEVER, when I was in the computer I noticed that there was alot of dust undert the fan for the cpu, I had not done one of these fans before it conver the whole thing, anyway I took the fan off and there was dirt and dust just caked on the heat sink, it would not even come out with compressed air so I gently got most of it with a tweaser and then blew it out, now it doesn't have that loud noise like the cdrom going it starts and is quiet like it should be, it was being over worked, anyway after that it still goes to the error message so she found the disk and I will put the system back on. I will leave this open for more questions if I have any, thanks

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.
