You're right again, Jerry. I never realized it would take the last part of a folder name as a file extension, chopping it to 3 characters.

Copy the following into notepad and save it as fix.bat, then double click. This should fix the show hidden files and folders setting not staying checked
Code:
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL /v CheckedValue /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Check under Documents and Settings\##~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5
and you should now see the Local Settings folder. (I've also included fix.bat in the attached zip file)

Ii don't think this will fix the issue though, but maybe we'll get lucky. I think it's the fact that Movie Maker installer is reporting the path it's trying to use as C:\DOCUME~1\#~~CH~1.YOU\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\setup.exe
It should be using:
C:\DOCUME~1\##~~CH~1.YOU\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\setup.exe

All the environment variables show the two ## symbols, and the moviemk.inf file doesn't even use the temp variable. It could be the Windows Installer has the wrong path stored in the registry. I've attached another batch file for you to run that will check the most likely places in the registry. This one will create a file on your desktop named {1}.txt and also open it in Notepad, but it won't delete the file when you close Notepad. You'll need to attach that file to your reply, as it will be too large to paste. Just click Go Advanced (if in the quick Reply window) then click the paperclip icon. Browse to the file on your desktop, then click the Upload button to attach the file.

Also, have you tried re-installing Movie Maker from the Administrator account?
Reboot the PC, and at the Welcome screen press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice. This should bring up the classic login box. Enter Administrator for the username and the password for that account (many systems have no password, so leave it blank if you didn't set one) and try installing from that account.

I'll have to try creating a user with the same name you are using, see if maybe there is just a bug in the Movie Maker/Windows installer that is misreading the symbols in the username, but I won't get around to that until later on.

I'm suspect of a profile folder and an account name with those characters. It either indicates a problem with the account or it could certainly cause some. Create a new account named something simple like "test" and see if programs install.

Hey TheOutcaste! I did what you told me to do and now i see a folder called Locals Settings in Documents and Settings. Thanks for that.
I also have the file attached, that you can check.

And by the way, Creating another account is probably the last thing I want to do because it is a lot of work and some files, after I delete the account, stay back and refuse to be deleted. I am trying to stay away from that but if HAVE TO do that then I will.

One more thing, I did not yet do the things where the windows things comes up and i have to pres Ctrl+Alt+Del. I will that later on though. And thanks a lot for helping me guys. I really appreciate TheOutcaste trying to help me a lot and going through a lot. Thanks Again! I will be waiting for your next reply.

It has been a week since anyone has replied back to this thread. I was just wondering what had happened. TheOutcaste, is it possible for you to check that file anytime soon?

Didn't forget, but seems with the updates to this site email notifications are sometimes not being sent, didn't get one until your post today.

Looked over the file, and can't find any entries with the wrong path..

At this point I can't think of anything else other than trying the install from the Administrator account, or creating an account named test as DoubleHelix has suggested.

It could be something corrupt in your current userprofile, or could be a glitch in the installer where it's changing the ## in your user name to a single #.
A possible workaround would be to create a folder with only one #:

C:\Documents and Settings\#~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5\Local Settings\Temp\IXP000.tmp

Then run the install. If you get the same error, immediately check your temp folder for the IXP000.TMP folder, and copy it's contents to the folder you created under the folder with just one #, in other words, copy everything from:
C:\Documents and Settings\##~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5\Local Settings\Temp\IXP000.tmp
to
C:\Documents and Settings\#~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5\Local Settings\Temp\IXP000.tmp

You could also paste the following line into Notepad and save it on your desktop with a .bat extension (be sure Save as Type: is set to All Files), then double click it if you get the error. It will copy everything for you.
If the IXP000.tmp folder name changes, you'd have to edit the name to match though.

Code:
xcopy /E /H /I /K /O "C:\Documents and Settings\##~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5\Local Settings\Temp\IXP000.tmp\*.*" "C:\Documents and Settings\#~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5\Local Settings\Temp\IXP000.tmp\"

Hey! Thank You for replying, and I am sorry if I was bothering you. Anyways, I did what you told me to do and I did it but unfortunately it did not work either. The same error message pooped up. I eventually managed to install the program by doing it manually. I went to the file path shown on the error message and I run the setup and it worked. It did not work automatically though. One problem with Movie Maker though. When I open movie maker, a message pops up again with 3 options, "Don't Send", "Send Error Report", and "Debug". This really bothers me. To give you more information and some more problems with my computer, there is probably a problem with the audio or microphone. I think this is the problem because, when I plug in a microphone, the computer doesn't take the input of it. When I use the microphone on "Sound Recorder" a error message comes up saying:
"Your audio hardware cannot record into files like the current file. To record, create a new document.

I was wondering if this would help you help me solve any problems. Thank you!

Ever wonder HOW to change User Shell Folders?
Don't wonder any more here is where you do it!

These folders the OS uses called User Shell Folders key stores the paths to Windows Explorer folders the shell uses by user profiles.

The keys in question are:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

&
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

--------------------------------------------

1.) Entries in:

User Shell Folders key take precedence over entries in the Shell Folders key.

2.) Entries in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER take precedence over entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

3.) Entries in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders are NOT used in Windows 2000 & possibly not XP either.

4.) The default settings in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders are:

Name: AppData
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: %USERPROFILE%\Application Data

Name: Cache

* Talk about a GOOD idea for an application! This allows you to move this stuff around, & in the case of IE stuff? I do it anyhow... I move its temp files to a Ramdisk!

I am so sorry, but i don't understand a word written up there. I am completely new to all this technical things and that is probably why I don't understand it. If you could explain more, that would help.

Create a new user account, and log in with it. Then see if you have all these same problems.
