Temp Folder Problem!
Hi! I don't know exactly where this thread belongs but i thought this would probably be the closest to where it belongs. Sorry if it is in he wrong place.

Okay! The problem that i have is that there is something wrong with my Temp folder perhaps. i think it is probably deleted or renamed or something. I looked for it and i did find it but i am not sure what is wrong with it. When i try to run a new installation for example, the other i was trying to re-install windows movie maker, and an error message comes up. The error message is shown below. What should i do to get m Temp folder 'working' again?

p.s My Operating system is Windows XP (if it concerns you) I just have the theme set as a Vista theme so, don't be fooled by the appearance of the message.

the only thing I can say is enter the exact error code in to Google and see
what comes up----enter all of it as it appears

also go to Microsoft and see if you can find your error code in their knowledge support database.

also do a general search of the knowledge support database for problems with temp files.

after that stumped

Okay.. This is what i did. I got someone else's computer and went and got their LOCALS~! folder and then copied it to [##~~CH~1.YOU]. I am not sure if i did the right thing or not. When i copied the file, a message came up that says do u want to replace the LOCALS~1 file with LOCALS~1 file? I never saw LOCALS~1 file in the folder so i decided to click yes to replace and then it replaced the file i guess, but i still can't see the file there. I think it is hidden and so the installation programs can't see it. How do 'unhide' it (if that is a word :P) ?

LOCALS~1 is the short name for the Local Settings folder.
It is hidden, so you have to set your system to show hidden and system files.
You can also access it directly by clicking Start | Run then type "%userprofile%\Local Settings" (including the quotes) and press enter. you should then be able to see the Temp folder.

To change View Settings
In Windows Explorer, click on Tools | Folder Options -> View Tab
Check the following:
Display the contents of system folders (not present in Win2K)
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the following:
Hide extensions for known file types (WinXP)
Hide file extensions for known file types (Win2K)
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)

Also, the error message shows #~~CH~1.YOU but you are typing ##~~CH~1.YOU; was that just a typo?
Also, is that really the folder name, or are you modifying it for privacy so your username doesn't show? Not a usual choice for a user name but that should not be a problem. Unless some form of spyware has renamed things.
If you click on Start | Run and enter %temp%, do you get an error, or does the Temp folder appear?

It looks like there's a problem with the Windows profile. Try logging in with a different account.

Hey TheOutcaste, yes sry that was a typo. I meant #~~CH~1.YOU. And when i did what said about changing the folder options thing, i still don't see any other folders in the window and for sure not LOCALS~1. Yes, when i type %temp% on Start | Run, the folder does open, but i believe it is PROBABLY in a different location. I am not sure, because i can't see or access my LOCALS~1 folder.

p.s. On the error msg, #~~CH~1.YOU <--- this is the name that really comes up BUT when i go to documents and settings the folder has a longer weirder name which is -----> ##~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5. I don't know where the numbers came from but ##~~cHiRaG~~## is what i names it.

If you open a Command window and type

echo %temp%

you will get the exact path and name of the temp folder.

In Documents and Settings do you have a ##~~cHiRaG~~## folder and a ##~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5 folder? If so, the former is probably from a previous Windows install and the latter is from the current install; and YOUR-4F1261A8E5 is/was your computer name.

Hey. I don't have these two folders. I only have ##~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5 folder. I am sorry but what is a command window? I am sorry if that is a stupid question.

Hey! What do I do with the exact path.
The path is ..
C:\DOCUME~1\##~~CH~1.YOU\LOCALS~1\Temp

One more thing.
When i do the changing the folder options thing no other files are displayed there. But it shows like 13 hidden folders on the status bar. When i went back to chk if "Show hidden files and folders" is checked, it wasn't so chked it back and clicked apply and then okay. The file was still not there, so went back to do the same and "Show hidden files and folders" was not checked again, when i know i put a check mark on it. What do i do keep "Show hidden files and folders" checked. I think it changes back automatically.

You prove the point made by DoubleHelix: "It looks like there's a problem with the Windows profile."

The value of %temp% shown should be C:\DOCUME~1\##~~CH~1.YOUR-4~1\LOCALS~1\Temp

It probably means that your %userprofle% is messed up since, I think, %temp% is built off of that.

I'm not sure where to go from here, but if you tell us what you get from

echo %userprofile%

I think one or more of the other posters will know what to do.

The short name for ##~~cHiRaG~~##.YOUR-4F1261A8E5 is ##~~CH~1.YOU so your %temp% variable is correct. But the error message in the screen shot in your first post shows #~~CH~1.YOU; only one # symbol, so something someplace has the incorrect shortname for your profile path, so sure looks like something is up with this userprofile

The fact that you can't get the hidden folders setting to stick may be part of it.
Let's get some data from your system. Highlight the following code and then copy it then paste it into notepad. Save it on your desktop as getdat.bat -- be sure to change the Save As Type setting in Notepad to All Files before saving.

Or, you can download the attached zip file and extract getdat.bat to your desktop

Double click getdata.bat. A notepad window will open. Copy and paste the contents into your next reply, CTRL+A to select all, CTRL+C to copy, then CTRL+V to paste. When you close the Notepad window, the temp file (C:\{1}.txt) will be deleted

Code:
@echo off
if Exist c:\{1}.txt del c:\{1}.txt
pushd %userprofile%
cd ..
 >c:\{1}.txt set
>>c:\{1}.txt echo.
>>c:\{1}.txt dir /x
>>c:\{1}.txt echo.
>>c:\{1}.txt reg query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL /v CheckedValue
>>c:\{1}.txt reg query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL /v DefaultValue
>>c:\{1}.txt reg query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\NOHIDDEN /v CheckedValue
>>c:\{1}.txt reg query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\NOHIDDEN /v DefaultValue
>>c:\{1}.txt reg query "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Policies" /s
>>c:\{1}.txt reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /s
>>c:\{1}.txt reg query "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /s
start /w notepad c:\{1}.txt
popd
del c:\{1}.txt
