hard drive volume letters missing
i have winxp. i recently purchased Paragon Drive Backup 9.0. I have 2 internal hard drives: a wd 200g to backup to, and a barracuda 250g for everyday use. when i click on my computer, the barracuda shows up as C for the NTFS, and D for the Fat32. The volumes on the wd show up as E and F respectively, as they should. When I open up the Paragon, the drives do not have any letters, only (*) for all four.
I then went to Disk Mangement, and found that the 4 volumes do not have a letter designation. When I clicked on "change drive letter", C thru F were not available. How do I get disk management to recognize the volume letters? If it did, i feel sure Paragon would follow suit.

Paragon (and most other such programs) almost never assigns the same drive letters as XP (or any other NT system). This is especially true from bootable media such as the Paragon boot CD. The letters are not intrinsic to the drives as they were in DOS, so that is why you should never use drive letters for identification with partitioning tasks. Always use drive location or size to be sure you are working on the right one.

As for the problem of Windows not seeing the drive letters, do the drives appear in explorer? Are they designated with letters there?

Are you using any virtual drive software, such as Daemon Tools or Alcohol?

Drive letters are not necessary and can be turned off in Vista and XP. Do you use any "tweaking" programs?

Elvandil, thanks for the reply.

Yes, the drives appear in explorer. They are designated with letters.

As far as I know, I am not using any virtual drive software.

As far as "tweaking" programs, I am not sure what you mean. Please give me a couple of examples.

X-Setup, Vista Manager, etc.

Can you change any drive letters in Disk Management?

Can't change letters.

I have decided to go back to using Acronis True Image 11 to create backups. I was able to solve some issues I had with it, and I much prefer it over Paragon. Besides, Acronis recognizes all the drive letters.
