Services.msc issues
Hey guys I got a call today from a customer not able to get online. As I get there and begin to troubleshoot, I realize the issue is because some required services are not started. For example the DHCP Client Service and a few others. When trying to start them I got for the DHCP service I got an "Element not found" error and for the rest I got errors that the dependencies/group could not be started.

This is the second time I ran into this issue, today was vista last time was XP and when it was XP even when loggin in as Administrator the services would not start. Any ideas? I didnt have alot of time to troubleshoot so I did a system restore and all was good, but im curious as to what would cause this.

This is commonly caused by the installation or removal of applications that affect the TCP/IP stack. Many times a stack repair will fix it.

With Vista, if you suspect you have corrupted TCP/IP files, run:

netsh interface ipv4 reset
netsh interface ipv6 reset

Then reboot

DHCP Client Service Manages network configuration by registering and updating IP addresses and DNS names.

*If your Internet Service Provider, (ISP) supplies a Dynamic IP Address when ever your machine requires a connection to the Net, set this to Automatic.

If your Internet Service Provider, (ISP) has given you a Static IP, you can disable this service. Test it out and see if you are unsure.

Well all the ISP's I've dealt with are always Dynamic so far, the thing that was getting me with the services was that quite a few were stopped and when trying to start them I would get errors that the dependency group failed to start.
