"Closing networks" at login
An older Compac Presario with XP, running fine for years, suddenly will not logon with startup. Rebooted, the pc shows the default UerName and asks for my password, and when I enter it, the monitor goes blank for a moment, then a window pops up saying "Closing Network Connections" and "Logging Off." Then, in a few moments, we're back to the login window.

Trying to go into safe mode, the same logon/closing network/logging off cycle repeats.

Suggestions?

Closing networks
if memory serves me right, Safe mode should offer several options, Safe mode with out network, safe mode command prompt etc. which are you choosing? It may be such a thing that a virus has gotten on your system,, I would suggest a couple things. I would try to boot "safe mode with out network" to see if the system comes up, If it does see further in this reply for possible fix. If you cannot boot into "safe without network" then try this. Boot into "safe mode command prompt"

then do the following.

move to the program files directory and do a dir /p this will display 1 page at a time, look for any files and folders that have a date that matches closely the date that our PC started acting up, Delete them

same with the Windows directory and the system32 directory
Look for files with odd names only delete for the most recent date's and maybe back a day or 2. there are alot of real Windows log files that you may delete but Windows wil re create them.

Best of luck

Don't delete any files or folders that are legitimate windows folders and file's
