IE won't open
HI ya'll,

I am trying to help my dad clean up his pc. He has a Dell Deminision 4700. He let his antivirus expire some time ago and has had trouble. When he brought it to me I could access the internet, but now when I double click (or select of the menu, or the .exe file) the program looks like it is going to open, shows the hourglass, and then just stops.

He had a program called Vista Antivirus 2008. I ran TrendMicro's Housecall, which helped eliminate a lot of problems, but I had to do someother things. I purchased XSoftSpy XE and RegCure. I ran both of those multiple times, but I couldn't get totally rid of the Vista problem.
Then I discovered that I had another problem; Vonda or Vondo. So I downloaded Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware program and ran it. That is when the problems with the Internet Explorer started.

I also had a DocumentViewer problem and found a fix from Microsoft.com to repair.

Additionally I can not change the wallpaper.

Oh yeah and he had something called NOrton 360. I used a utility off of the NOrton website to uninstall this program.

I am sorry if this is a repeat of an early discussed problem, I kept looking up IE problems, and couldn't find this one.

ANy help you can give would be great.
Thanks Much,
Alison

You should run only 1 antivirus program, & 1 firewall at a time (more than one of each will conflict). Then install and run one or more anti-spyware program. I use
grisoft's AVG anti virus, Zone ALarm firewall, spybot search and destory , Lavasoft's ad-aware and windows defender for the spyware program.
Once in a while I will run ccleaner to clean up the compter.
All of the above programs are free.
If you try running the above and still have trouble, I suggesat you d/l run HiJack this and post it in the malware section. One of the specialist (yellow shield by their name) will help you.

Thanks Vicks, sounds like a plan. Should I delete these programs that I installed?
I will start downloading the programs you suggested and moving the the other pc via a thumb drive.
Thanks again,
Alison

Well, I can't go to the web, but AVG can
Just FYI, I downloaded AVG onto my thumbdrive (from my PC) and transferred over to my DAd's. The software needed to update, and I was thinking, "This isn't going to work", but lo and behold it hit the net and got the updates. It is running a scan right now. I feel hopeful
Thanks,

I think I would uninstall them, reboot the computer then one by one add the others. I have used these for several years and have never had a security problem. Also have put them on computers for others and they too have had success. You do need to remember to update stuff tho. The AVG will automatically update each day when you log on line.
Let us know if you have success.

Zone Alarm Install Error
Hi,
I installed AVG 8.0 and ran it. It found 2 issues, outside of cookies. Interestingly enough one of them was Internet Explorer! I let it fix/repair the problems and reboot. Then I tried to set up ZoneAlarm and got the following error... please excuse the length...

Setup was unable to find the msi package or patch
'http://redirect.xonelabe.com/redirect/...

So I don't think it was able to go to the web. Any ideas?
Thanks,
AL

might try a different mirror to download Zone Alarm. Try from one of the following
www.majorgeek.com
www.download.com
I think I would try one or more of the anti spyware programs first.
With XP SP2 if you go to the control panel, click on the security shield, make sure the windows firewall is not checked when you try to install ZA.

More Issues
Happy Fourth ~
I can't tell if I am doing things right so I thought I would double check before I post the HiJack This Log File.

I downloaded, installed and ran the programs in the order recommended.
AVG
Zone Alarm (had issues, so I skipped)
SpyBot
AdAware (It would not run properly with SpyBot on the system, so I uninstall this)
Zone Alarm again from Majorgeek. This time it worked.

After each install I rebooted and checked to see if IE would open and the result is still the same. It shows the hour glass for two to three turns and then just returns to the pointer. No error, Nothing.

Additionally SpyBot opens each time and asks me if I want to allow or deny changes that I don't understand. And it doesn't show the complete file path, so I don't know what it is really asking.

Finally I installed HiJack This. I am going to run the HiJack this, but first I have two other questions.
1. When I download a program like AVG, I get a setup file. After I run the setup do I need to keep this?
2. Do I post the HJT file here in addition to the HJT forum?

I can't tell ya'll how much I appreciate your help.

Attach the hijack log to a post here and one of the qualified persons ( there is a little gold shield beside their names) will help you. It could take a bit of time because everyone 'helping' on TSG does so as a volunteer.
I know how much you appreciate the help!!!! I too have received help here and have learned alot just reading the different posts. (This has saved me and several friends much time and money for service!) I hope I am not telling you wrongly, but I would post the hijack log in the security & HJT section...
GOOD LUCK

I just thought of something else. You might start the computer up in the safe mode and run the anti spyware and antivirus programs in there. sometimes you will be able to find more for some reason.
