Solved: Warning - Ms Update Kb951748 / Kb953230
Subject security update avail from MS auto update cause loss of internet and email connection. Haven't figured out why just yet. If you use ZoneAlarm, you can disable/turn off and all is well until you turn it back on. AVG email scan shows connecting to cdptpa-satxlb.mail.rr.com and never connects. I finally uninstalled the KB updates and was able to get back to the internet and email.

If anyone has a solution, sure would like to hear it.

PS - This on AMD3800+ with XP SP2

On an AMD 3800+ AM2 rig on SP3 I downloaded KB951748 with no subsequent problems. KB953230 was not offered as a relevant critical update for that particular PC.

The KB953230 was referenced when you go to details of the KB951748. Do you use ZoneAlarm, too?

Just pasted KB951748 into Google - many hits and apparently widespread with users of ZoneAlarm regardless of SP2 or SP3, also doesn't seem to care which OS, although one mentioned it would not install on their Vista machine. Pretty sure someone will come along with a patch (ZA or MS)

After two hours of messing around, I found an inelegant solution that will work temporarily ... set the Internet Zone Security permission slider from high to medium. The connection will be restored.

I discovered this after I finally figured out ZA was blocking my internet connections, and turned it off. Once everything worked again as normal, I started playing around and hit on this lowered permission setting.

From Zone Alarm site. Seems like a lot of trouble vs. just uninstalling the problematic update and waiting for a patch from MS or ZA..

Seems to be a conflict with Zone Alarms basic fire wall that makes you unable to connect internet and e-mail. Uninstalled KB951748 and that fixed it for now. Win Update is bugging me now again to install their obstreperous little update, but of course I won't until they fix it.
It downloads automatically but can not install until I allow it. So the little yellow shield thingy sits in my system tray looking at me. Should I just ignore it or is there a way to tell it to go away, and how would one know when a fixed version is ready??

I changed auto up date to just notify me, the clicked on the yellow shield and chose manual install in lieu of automatic, removed the check mark from box and closed window - then another window pops asking if you want to ever see that up date again, I said no, and no more notices from MS update. When a patch is released I will reset everything back to automatic and install the update.....Auto update will advise me of other updates as they arise, just not this one.

Haven't a clue. Again, refer you to post #6. I've uninstalled the offending MS update and will not reinstall until a patch is available from MS or ZA.

Ok, thanks.

But the solution seemed relatively easy to implement to allow ZA to run, and the security patch would also be active.

We tried uninstalling ZA and reinstalling new and still had problem, so not sure if the remedy in #6 will work. Again, seems like a lot of work for a simple problem. I'll wait for the patch.

I think the update is a fix for this supposedly big issue and maybe they rushed it w/o full testing .

For me, the update works with the McAfee and Online Armor firewalls. I bet M/S will say it's Zone ALarm's problem to work with SP3 so Zone Alarm is going to have to issue a patch
