I think i have an infection. i will list the symptoms and then post a HijackThis log. I am running Windows XP (Home) on a Dell Dimension 4600 with 80 gb HD and 2 gb RAM. I have AdAware and have scanned before posting this. Also have McAfee installed.

1. When I boot up (to any of the user accounts) I receive an icon (red shield with an 'X' through it) in the tray (bottom right) saying my computer might not be safe because Automatic Updates has been disabled. Mousing over the icon gives the tip 'Windows Security Alerts'.

2. When I right click on that icon and choose Open Security Center it opens the Windows Security Center, showing Automatic Updates are indeed turned off. When I click 'Turn On Auto Updates' it tells me it can't and to try it from Control Panel. I enable it from there and reboot and receive the same problem.

3. It seems that iexplore.exe and explorer.exe run as soon as I boot up, and for quite some time eat up all system resources. Not sure if this is related. Thing is, this happens every few minutes or so for about 30 seconds - explorer.exe uses 100% of the CPU.

4. Using msconfig, I looked at what was in the Startup tab. There were two strange ones - antivirus.exe and foumrish. Looking on sysinfo.org, I found the first was some kind of trojan and there was no information on the second. I think AdAware removed it. Either way, I unchecked both and rebooted. They still exist as choices, but remain unchecked. Is there any way to remove them from the list?
