Unable to click on items on taskbar
Hi everyone,

I have this problem with clicking on items in my task bar such as items in a group(like MSN's windows) or the items on my start menu cannot even be selected. Here are two screen shots.

For this picture, it shows that i can't even select item from my start menu.

For this picture, i wanted to click on the item to maximise it but it is not able to at all. Additionally, i think this problem also causes my keyboard to be not functioning while i am playing Final Fantasy 11.

I am using Windows XP Home edition. Is there any more information you would require? Thank you very much for your help.

Regards
Joshua

Joshua, Try the "LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix" at the link below. Instructions are on the page.

With all those desktop icons and everything and the kitchen sink in your tray, you will need a ton of ram to counteract all that. I bet Windows takes about 4 minutes to bootup?

Hi there Rich-M,

Yahh, i am guilty as charged! so your recommendation would be for me to clear alll of those stuff on the desktop to somewhere else eh?

For the stuff in my tray, i don't know what i should get rid of because there are stuff such as display manager and audio manager(i am using a samsung r40 laptop). Sorry for being such a noob, thank you for your comments and hope to have more advice from you.

It's hard for me to see well there but icons that you really need can be put in foldesr on the desktop by category simply by right clicking the desktop and choosing new folder. Ones you don't use need to be deleted as do any entries on Start or Program menus as they all slow down a boot and any program installers on desktop need to be moved to separate folders on hard drive as those really slow bootup. See all of that has to be ready to go on bootup before bootup is complete.
As for startup all you need is antivirus, antispyware, 3rd party firewall if in use, power keyboard keys if you have them ...everything else can go such as programs, audio, video update advisers..."Run, Msconfig, ok, startup" unckeck them your pc will thank you!
If something like a printer fails to work, then put it back which you can do but today none of that shouel be necessary.

Hi there Rich-M,

I had tried what you told me to do but unfortunately it seemed that i may have taken away something wrongly from my windows tray.

I now would encounter the blue screen of death upon reboot and it doesn't let me logon to windows at all.

BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : BF8364A3 BCP3 : F7A837CC
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1

the above is the error message i get and it seems to be related to the file win32k.sys also.

Hope you will be able to help me with this. Thanks a lot.

I can't see how there could be any relationship with this type of error and startup.
This error is either a ram issue, or a video card issue although heat and crud inside tower are also a possibility. Other possibility is still virus or malware where something in startup did actually precipitate this.
Can you tap F8 continuously after pressing the power button and land with a safe mode option? Then try safe mode with networking and tell us all entries checked and unchecked in startup....another thought if in startup is to click "Run", then type in chkdsk /r and hit enter and see if we can run checkdisk on the drive. ( the space between "k" and "/" is deliberate BTW.)
