Solved: Bootmgr is Compressed
Hey there,
I have seen this problem a few times, but everytime I see it the OS is Vista. I on the other hand have XP.
Problem is this, I wanted to start from scratch, something I have done a couple times over last couple years. I have an eMachine. I clicked on the recovery, it sent me to the PC angel where I did a full recovery. I then rebooted and low and behold a message that says Bootmgr is compressed cntl alt del .... after doing this all it simply did is reboot and give the message once again. I tried putting the disk in that I got with the computer, and it still would not work.

Please help, I am a single mom on a budget and can't afford to have to buy a new computer if I don't have to. I am using the one I have at work right now to post this. Thank you to anyone who takes time to read.... and most def thanks to anyone who can offer me some advice.

Searching for "XP Bootmgr is compressed" did get some hits, including this one: http://www.ocforums.com/archive/index.php/t-435230.html

The key link in those posts, and similar ones, seems to be no longer available. But there may be just enough information there to proceed. Talking about ...

"try changing the attributes of NTLDR from the Recovery Console like the article suggested?...

CD \
ATTRIB -C NTLDR"

Also see, especially the post #4, this oldie: http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...d.php?t=180830

The thing is I don't get a command prompt line. The recovery is built into my system and I just hit F11 to access it. When I get there then all I get is a blue box with 2 options Full Recovery where I lose everything (which I have already tried) and the other recovery where it backs it all up then recovers ( which I tried also ) When I put the cd disk in to do recovery from that all it does is ask me to hit R to start recovery if I don't click it fast enough it asks me to hit F11 to recover and if I don't hit that before countdown is finished it gives me the stupid BootMgr is Compressed hit Cntl+Alt+Del to restart ... of course all this does is keep going in a vicious cycle til I get mad and turn the stupid thing off. I will keep trying to access a command prompt somehow. I don't understand that DOS stuff very well so I'll prolly do more damage then good. Oi, this sucks because I and my kids sure do enjoy our computer. Thank you for replying and will keep trying and praying!

Thanks much!

I have not yet had to deal with that "Recovery" stuff, as I've been lucky enough to always have an actual Windows installation CD; so I don't know if there is anything you're missing when using that.

Any chance of borrowing a Windows CD from somebody? Not to install; just to boot from it into the "Recovery Console" or "Command Prompt" so that you can try those commands.

As a second attempt, if you can borrow a Windows XP CD, if you have the 25-character Windows registration code (often a sticker on the back, bottom or side of the PC) and can borrow a OEM copy of your Windows version (that is, XP Home, or Pro, or Media Edition) you should be able to install from that CD while using your reg. code. That is perfectly legal. You will probably then have to get the proper chipset and some other drivers from the manufacturer's web site.

Failing both, contact the manufacturer or retailer, explain the problem, and see what they can do about selling you for a nominal price an installation CD that will work.

Please consider this matter closed. I didn't have a chance to have to try these methods as to the fact that I played with a disc that came with an old emachine I had and it put that machines ghost recovery on my machine. well it didn't boot and yeah i would of been in a heap of trouble if this hadnt worked but grace be god it worked. windows didn't load but once I put my machines recovery disc in after this and did a recovery again for the 100th time this time it took. I have never been so happy to see that windows xp logo on startup. I feel like it has been gone forever.
thats neither here nor there, thanks for trying to help I super appreciate it.
!!Hugs!!
