Solved: NMIndexStore
My XP Pro system came with Nero Essentials 6 or 7, I can't tell which. Apparently, a component therein is NMIndexStore, which keeps running in background, aborts, with the system then asking to terminate the process. Within the Nero application, I cannot find how to disable NMIndexStore. If anyone can provide a pointer, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

NMindexstore.exe is the indexing service for nero scout.

Disable Nero Scout

Since the first method to disable the unwanted process was not applicable to my situation, I ran the second method. Hopefully, that will have proved successful. Time will tell. Thanks for the lead.

If you do ctl-alt-del, you should be able to confirm that it is no longer running.
(given you rebooted)

Disable in Services (Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services). It really provides no useful function for most people unless they have such a large multimedia library that they can't keep track of where it is. And it keeps searching for any new entries.

I did reboot my system, and NMIndexStore continues to be seen in Windows Task Manager > Processes in a kind of now you see it, now you don't.

In Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, NMIndexStore is shown as being disabled, but in fact, it is very much alive and kicking.

In Services, is NMIndexingService disabled?

Yes, it is disabled in Services, but by watching Task Manager > Processes, I can see it popping in and out of existence at least once a minute.

Disable Scout. It can't index without the service, anyway.

What process are you seeing in Task Manager? If the service is disabled, it can't be that. Is the the indexing server? What is it's exact name?

If you can't figure out how to turn off the indexing in the settings for scout, write down the name of the process you see in Task Manager, go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nero\Lib and rename the process to .old from .exe.

I have tried to do just that. Exactly what steps do I need to take?

There is no Nero folder under C:\Program Files\Common Files

FWIW, following is the dialog box that pops up now and then. However, NMIndexStoreSvr.exe shoulders on, popping in and out of existance approximately once every 10 seconds:

NMIndexStoreSvr.exe

NMIndexStoreSVR.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

If that file is not in Common Files (as mine is), then do a search and find out where it is, exactly.

That's what I ended up doing. I searched for the file, and then altered its name so it would not run effective with the next reboot. Somewhere within the Registry, there must be an entry therein that kicks off that program. So far, so good, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Maybe the next time I run CCleaner, it will fix the Registry and delete the spurious and related entries.

My thanks to you and the other contributors for guidance in resolving this problem.
