Solved: I turn PC off, it comes back on, turn it off, comes back on...
Once again the computer impaired one comes to the table of knowledge...

I shut down my PC, fans stop, lights go out. About 6-8 mins later it starts up again, been doing this for four days now. I ran a virus scan which came out clean. The only way to keep it turned off is to unplug it. The only tinkering I've done lately is to try to open a port on my router (which I didn't get done, forgot password and reset button doesn't work). I don't think my PC is set to hibernate, I have never used that feature.

Is there something I should check?

Thanks!

That's a new one on me. The first thing that comes to mind is something setting the BIOS timer to power on the system This usually only has a specific time setting, so something would have to program that at each shutdown.
You can check that by restarting the PC after shutting down, and boot into the BIOS and check to see if the timer has been set. If you disable it, boot into windows, then shut down and find it's been re-enabled, then some sort of malware is on your system.
Same for the Wake on LAN setting, which requires a "Magic Packet" directed to this particular PC. Your router would also have to allow that packet through for it to come from the internet, plus something on your system would have to send a notice out when the system shut down. It could be done by someone sending that packet every X minutes, but the restart times would be more random, sometimes only 1-2 minutes.

If you have a roommate with a PC, they could be playing a trick on you. This could be done even when they are not there, as long as their PC is there and is on.

Unplugging the network cable would test for that.

Some systems can be set to power on by moving the mouse. If you happen to jostle the desk, that might be enough to power it up, but it would only happen if the mouse got moved, so it wouldn't be a consistent 6-8 minutes after shutdown. Same with the Wake on Ring (phone has to ring and dial-up modem must be connected).

As far as the router reset not working, some require a specific sequence to Reset to Factory Defaults, like holding the reset button for 10 or 30 seconds, or holding it in while powering on the router. If you don't follow the specific steps, the reset button just does a reboot, not a reset. What is the make and model of the router? We can track down a manual and look up the procedure.

HTH

Thanks for the quick response! I went into bios (phoneix award) but could not find any timer setting. Neither could I find any wake on LAN setting. I went into the power management section/event control and "resume by pci-e" is the only thing enabled. I'm not too concerned about this, I'll just switch the thing off.

As for the router... it's a Gigafast EE410R. I did a lot of google and found various combinations of unplug/hold reset/plug in and times for each but none have worked so far. I will try to find online manual, duh... why didn't I think of that? LOL!

When you turn computer off, try to unplug ethernet cable.
If that doesn't work, keep unplugging other items connected to your computer.

Cripes! For the router reset I'm doing all these unplugs/button push stuff. I figured out when you get to the login page, leave the password BLANK and just hit "login"! BadaBing! I was trying to put the default "admin" for password. Still, after all that can't figure out how to forward utorrent port even with all the tuts..

Will try advice about unplugging stuff...

I think malware for me too... I turned PC off and unplugged ethernet cable, PC didn't restart. Now how to find what the malware is. I did virus (Avira) scan already and came out clean. Pleaseeee...don't say I have to reformat...LOL!

On the bright side... I did get a utorrent port forwarded! Thanks Broni!
