Sounds like you are trying to do so before PC has booted.

Windows likes to show desktop and pretend to be ready but it is still booting up until hard drive activity stops.

Nelbert:

Once the desktop appears to have loaded completely, give it another minute or so before you start using your computer. It may be checking for new Windows updates or checking for an antivirus definition file update or checking something else online - depending on what's installed in your computer.

If you'd like to post a HijackThis log here, we can see what programs are loading during startup. Most computer users, especially newbies and novices, are guilty of having too many unnecessary programs running in the background. A small startup load equates to a faster startup time, increased overall performance, and a reduced risk of freezes and lockups.

Is your computer an older one with a slow processor and limited RAM?

If your computer is only 4 years old and has 2048 MB(2 GB) of RAM, the processor speed and amount of RAM isn't negatively affecting speed and performance.

Hopefully, the HijackThis log will tell us something.

You have Iolo and Tuneup Utilities running in the background, which is probably one reason for the slow startup. There's no need to have "optimizers", "boosters", "cleaners", etc. running in the background. Besides the fact that they can bog down a computer, many of them are useless and can cause problems.

You're using Avira security suite for viruses and other protection. Security suites are good, but many of them are memory-hungry and take awhile to load, so that's something you have to live with. That's one reason why I prefer a stand-alone antivirus program.

You don't want to have any more programs loading during startup and running in the background than you really need.

After you've uninstalled them and have restarted your computer, run a new scan with HijackThis and then post that new log here.

The O4 startup list looks good now. The only entry in the list that doesn't need to load and run automatically is:

Nokia.PCSync PcSync2.exe

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.p...er=PcSync2.exe

Let's disable it from doing so. If you discover later that you need it to load and run automatically, you can re-enable it.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark from that entry, then click Apply - OK.

Don't restart your computer yet!

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the Services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on:

a-squared Free Service

Bonjour Service

FLEXnet Licensing Service

Google Updater Service

InstallDriver Table Manager

ServiceLayer

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual", then click Apply. You have to do one at a time.

Close the Services window, then restart.

When the small SCU window appears on the desktop, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

Sir Flavallee, I can now access My Computer icon in desktop eventhough the icon in the taskbar has not shown.Thank you for this. However, the avira antivirus still takes a long time to load.Is this normal for a antivirus suite?
