Hi,
I am using Microsoft XP service pack 2 on a Medion Laptop. The problem is that having uninstalled 'Dawn of War' the computer boots up but the screen shows 10 vertical bands each of six different colours. I have tried to hard boot the system by installing the OS from the cd drive (Genuine MS OS cd) hoping that the laptop would format, but it wouldn't (No problem in loosing all my programs as there is nothing important to save). I have also tried to access the 'c' prompt but again to no avail. I have also disconnected the power supply and the battery, again no luck. I just cannot get past this graphics problem. I do not use this computer on the web so it is not possible that I have picked up a virus, unless it is from a genuine copy of the game software. Prior to this uninstall I have not had any similar problems so If anyone can help short of using a blow torch on the thing I would be most grateful.

Have you tried booting into 'Safe Mode'?

Unable to get passed graghics to see what the os is doing. Lots of noise from the cd drive but nothing on the screen other than the banded graphics.

I can get into the set up screen by hitting F2 but the screen is hard to read as the banded graphics break up the words.

I am unsure as to why this has happened. It could just be an extreemly unfortunate co-incidence that your graphics adaptor has gone faulty. On booting the laptop do you see any writing at all or do the graphics mess up as soon as the laptop powers on?

You havn't hit it and broken it have you?

You joke injest but I think you have solved the problem, no I didn't hit the laptop hard but I did flex it and in doing so the screen graphics disappeared and bingo the system worked as if nothing had happened. I think it is a problem with a dry joint on the motherboard or a faulty connection which is in the area beneath the 'Enter' key. Probably caused by contant thumping of the keyboard as one does when the laptop decides to do what it wants to and not what you want it to do.
I feel it might be an expensive move to have it repaired as good money after bad comes to mind..

Glad it works now m8!

There are quite a few laptop repair specialists out there who can fix this type of problem. The good companies offer a 'No fix no fee' policy and usually charge appx £60 + carriage for the repair. If the problem persists then it may well be worth a go.
