I have Dell PowerEdge server (2950) running 32bit Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2 (4GB RAM) on a member server on my work domain.
We recently switched the static IP properties of the NIC (different IP address, subnet, default gateway and DNS server). The server accepted these changes and everything worked fine for about 2 weeks. Then we had a power failure and the UPS also 'hiccuped' causing this server to reboot.
When the server came back up it was not able to communicate with the network; I checked the NIC properties and the settings had reverted to the settings that had been configured prior to the IP settings switch.
I changed all the settings to the new, correct settings again and pressed ok. A message appeared that said that those settings duplicated those of a NIC that was not presently installed in the system. It asked me if I wanted to keep the settings or change them and I opted for keeping them.
The system seemed to work okay after that but everytime I went into the NIC properties I got the same message. After researching that message went into device manager by starting it with the switch to show hidden devices. I was able to see a 'greyed out' NIC and deleted it.
The message in the NIC properties went away, but now I am seeing odd behavior in TCP/IP and this server can no longer talk to some machines on the same network but can to others. When I ping this server from another server I get the message "request timed out". Some machines on the network can ping this server, but others cannot.
Since I deleted the 'non-present' NIC from device manager is there any way to clean up the remnants that seem to be causing this behavior?
