Networking in Vista
Alright so I haven't quite figured out how to work out all of the networking restrictions in Vista Home Premium.
This is how I have it configured on TWO of my computers running vista:
Network discovery: on
file sharing: on
public folder sharing: on
printer sharing: on
password protected sharing: off
media sharing: on

With this config I can access other non windows vista computers on my network. When I try to access the other computer with vista on it from a vista computer it asks me to enter a username and password. This happens no matter which vista computer I'm using to access the other.

when trying to access a vista computer from a windows xp computer I can access the public folders, but I cannot access any other folders I share. It gives me the "you don't have permissions" message.

I can access the windows xp computers from any vista computer.

This is how I have the sharing for a random folder configured (they are all the same):
Share name: music
Permissions: Everyone: Full controll

I have no idea why I'm getting the errors that I am. Anyone have any ideas?

I had to enable password protected sharing to share anything but the default folders. It's also better to create shares and remove them by using Computer Management. I don't know if it's the same on Vista, but removing shares through explorer sometimes leads to windows still checking for the shares even after they've been removed. It occurs more often if you don't remove shares before changing a drive letter the shares are/were on.

Your response made me try a couple things. I had never actually tried to enter a user name and password at the prompt, but it's the same thing that is required for password protected logon (my username and password). Can anyone tell me why password protected logon seems to be enabled ever after I shut it off?

You didn't tell us if you're in a domain or workgroup. My advice; use a dedicated server and work with a domain, you'll be forever happy.

It's a workgroup. How do you set up a domain? I have a server.
