Solved: Networking gone crazy in Vista
I've been having a strange networking problem in Vista 32-bit. I have no clue how this all started, I just noticed problems one day and it's been the same ever sense. My wireless card still works and I can connect to networks, but the actual networking interface in Vista is gone/corrupt. First off, the networking symbol in the task bar is x'd out. When I right click on it or highlight it nothing happens. When I click 'Network' on the start menu, I get a blank screen. If I go to the control panel and click on any of the 'network and internet' links the tab freezes and takes like 5 minutes to pop-up. This is extremely annoying when I travel and need to connect to a new wireless connection. It takes me 5 - 10 minutes to get the network connections window to come up so I can connect to a different network.

I'm having the exact same problem and it's why I came to the forum today.

Dell support wasn't any help.

I don't know what's wrong, but my first suspicion is a 3rd party firewall (internet security) that got misconfigured.

Make sure the following services are Started (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services). If you are not using the classic Control Panel view you'll probably have to drill down another level or two to find Administrative Tools.

Function Discovery Provider Host
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness
Network Store Interface Service

You're welcome, shirleyellenp, but I was really replying to the thread owner. For help on your similar problem please start your own thread with the relevant details. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Terry.

You were right, most of the services you listed were not started. However, when I try to start them I get the same error messages that shirleyellenp posted above.

I don't know what to do to get them started. Keep an eye on hirleyellenp's thread: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vi...k-toolbar.html

I read that shirleyellenp fixed his problem by following this link: http://8help.osu.edu/3618.html

Being the lucky sob that I am, I can't even get past the first step. I right click on computer, click manage, but under the system tools section I do not see 'Local users and Groups'.

Actually I think she used the Command line option, which is just below (on that link) what you are trying. But darned if I could follow all the localhost/localgroup stuff!

Wow I'm such an idiot. I must have mistyped something the first time because I thought I had tried using 'group' instead of host and it didn't work, however I just tried again and everythings back to normal now. Thanks so much Terry.

You're welcome for my effort. Strange, but after "working" on both threads I still don't understand what caused the problem or have any understanding of the solution. But the important thing is that you're working again!
