Solved: computer very slow and Explorer very slow/hangs
Hello,
Im hoping I can Please find some help. My Vaio has become slower and slower and now is Terrible. Separate from start up and processing speeds, Internet Explorer (IE 8) super slow (on any Internet connection). It gets the Not Responding message occasionally or just plain takes a very long time. I,ll even click on a window several times with nothing and then five windows will open with the same thing.

I have a ton of things on startup and services tabs from the msconfig window. So I'm sure I can clean that up but not sure exactly what I need to keep. Also not sure that is the real problem. Very seriously considering trying to reload vista but I have to find all my softwaRe discs. Not sure I have everything. I have a good bit of software on here. I use mcafee anti virus. Not opposed to changing that but would rather find the real problem bacause computer ran a couple of years fine with mcafee.

Please help. Thank you!!!

Sony Vaio VGN-NR385E; Windows Vista home premium SP1; 2GB ram; intel core duo CPU T5550 1.83GHz

also presumably unrelated my wireless adapter seems to have just stopped working.

Download from Piriform

Open CCleaner hit the tools button startup then copy to text pad Post the results in your next reply to me.
Just DONT us the registry cleaner function of CCleaner unless you know what you are deleting exactly!!

Why hasn't Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 been upgraded to SP2?

Have you been keeping up with and installing the important/recommended updates that are released every month?

-------------------------------------------------------

Let's see what's installed and auto-loading, and if any obvious issues need to be addressed.

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

----------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Services" tab.

Make sure that all service entries have a checkmark.

If some of them don't, check them all, then click Apply - OK - Restart.

computer very slow
Thanks for the guidance so far. Actually, I usually do install the updates. I review the "important updates" and have them installed each month. I might be going crazy but I didn't see SP2 as "important" until I just went and checked my update reminder after I read the blog and there it was. Both before and after the SP2 update was installed, I tried to run the scan and create log in HiJackThis. When I attempt to do that, I get a pop up window message that says:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:
notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press enter. Find the lines(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quote), and reboot.

For Vista: simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as adminstrator'."

When I click "OK" it runs but wont doesn't create the log.

Then I get a message that says "Cannot find the C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HiJackThis\hijackthis.log file. Do you want to create a new file?"

If I say yes, notepad opens but doesn't create the file for me.

If I rightclick the HijackThis icon, there is no option for "Run as adminstrator".

I did check the msconfig and the processes tab. All lines were checked.

I have not yet downloaded the CCleaner yet but can do that pending any latest recommendations you have.

Thanks.

Go to Control Panel - User Accounts.

Turn off or disable the User Account Control(UAC) feature, then apply the change.

Restart the computer.

HiJackThis should work okay now.

Or just disable them via ccleaner and go ahead and run the cleaner im sure you need to delete some temp files.

Also if you dont want to download anything try this.
Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp%

then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

After you're done, empty the Recycle Bin and restart the computer.

I copied this from a previous post from flavalee but if you dont want to download ccleaner it will take a bit longer but provide the same function

Go here and click one of the "Download @ MajorGeeks" links to download and save Norton Removal Tool 2012.0.0.19.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click it to run it.

Allow it to remove everything that's associated with Symantecs, Norton, and LiveUpdate.

After the removal process is finished, restart the computer if prompted to.

---------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Sorry for the delayed reply - I was out all day. Here is update:

A. I have installed CCleaner. I analyzed the Cleaner function and saved the file of recommended changes. I have not made the changes yet. I did not do anything on the Registry function. Log file summary below. Entire file is not below as it had a huge amout of line items.

B. I installed and ran the Norton Removal Tool.

C. I saved the uninstall list from HijackThis. Log file below.

I have not yet removed any of the Temp files or other apps or startup items yet. I wanted to share all this and get your input before I take further action. Thank you for the help!!

I see nothing in your computer for combating malware, spyware, hijackers, etc.

Download and save the free version of the following:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.51.2.1300

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.0.0.1118

then close all open windows first, then install them, then restart the computer.

DON'T do anything else with them yet.
