Solved: Laptop SLOW and LOUD

My laptop is extremely slow and loud. The fan runs most of the time and is loud. I've checked my CPU usage and it is almost always less than 50%. Sometimes I put a cold pack under the laptop to cool it down and it runs a bit better. Just to open Windows Explorer takes about 10 seconds.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them exactly as you see them there.

Write down only the names in the "Name" column that have their startup type set on Automatic / Automatic(Delayed Start).

If the "Name" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Have you cleaned it out of dust also?

There isn't a cover plate over the fan so the only way I know how to clean dust out of it is to take it apart, and I'm not sure which screws remove what. I'd hate to take it apart and screw something up. I dont know if spraying compressed air at the vent holes would work. It doesn't look like the dust would have anywhere to go but further inside. If you have any suggestions how to do this that would be great.

According to this information, the primary C drive has a capacity of 220.05 GB and has only 32.29 GB of free space.

Considering how full that hard drive is, that would account for some of the slowness and lag time, especially if it has a high percentage of fragmentation.

If you have a LOT of important and irreplaceable personal data stored in that computer, I'm hoping that you've been backing it up and saving it in external media, such as CD-R's/DVD-R's or an external hard drive or both.

Nothing besides AVG. I do back up my data. I will take some of it off. It's mostly photos. I defrag weekly.

There's no need to defrag the hard drive more than once a month because it's usually not needed and it puts added stress and wear on the hard drive.

Download and save and then install the free version of

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61.0.1400

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.1.0.1002

Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.

Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer.

After they're installed and updated, restart the computer.

Run a quick scan with each of them.

When each scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING they found.

Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the removal process can finish.

Note: DON'T use the computer while each scan is in progress.

No malware found. Tons of tracking cookies and two infected files removed. Seems to be running faster. I'm still working on getting data moved off the laptop. Thanks for your help. Only problem is since I did the step where I changed those services to Manual, I get a message (4 of them) from HP PhotoSmart Essentials that it can't find the installation package. I don't really use it so I went to Control Panel to uninstall it and there's no uninstall option when I highlight it. Double-clicking it does nothing.

HP Photosmart Essentials is part of the extra "bloatware" that comes as part of the driver software package for a HP printer.

That's why I always select the custom/advanced install option instead of the default/complete install option so I can uncheck and decline to install those extras.

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp% (% is the percentage symbol on the number 5 key)

and then click OK.

Once that temp folder appears and you can view its contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside it.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish.

After it's done, restart the computer.

Thanks - that resolved the issue with HP Photo Essentials. The computer is running faster already. Thank you very much. Is there anything else I need to do? Should I leave malwarebytes and SUPERanti-spyware on my pc?

I'm glad to hear the computer is running faster.

Leave MBAM and SAS installed and put them to use about once a week. Make sure to update their definition files before running a scan, and make sure to select and remove everything they find.
