| Solved: System stops responding a few minutes after starting I use Windows Vista Home Edition on my laptop, which is 3 years old and has never given me serious problems since I've owned it. I did not install any new software recently. About a week ago, my computer began to lock up about 5 minutes after I start it. I can move the cursor, but it has the blue "waiting" circle and does not respond to clicking or using key commands (including Control Alt Delete). The only way I can get out of it is to press the power button to shut the whole thing down. When I start it up again, I am given the option of starting it in Safe Mode. The locking up problem does not happen in safe mode, but it consistently happens if I try the regular mode again. So far I have tried a standard AVG scan and using a TDSS Killer download to look for rootkits. Neither of these yielded any results. I have talked to two Microsoft Tech Support people, but they seem much more interested in selling me the $99 service plan instead of solving my problem. Any advice would be appreciated! |

| Download and save and then install the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.62.0.1300 SUPERAntiSpyware 5.5.0.1012 Make sure to update their definition files during the install process. Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer. After they're installed and updated, restart the computer. Run a QUICK scan with each of them. When each scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING they found. Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the removal process can finish. Note: DON'T use the computer while each scan is in progress. ------------------------------------------------------- Click Start - Run, then type in %temp% (% is the percentage symbol on the number 5 key) and then click OK. Click Start - Run, then type in c:\windows\temp and then click OK. Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them. If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else. If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish. After it's done, restart the computer. ------------------------------------------------------ |

| Select "Safe Mode With Networking" because the computer will need to be on-line so you can download and install and update them. I personally have never used them in safe mode, so I don't know if they'll work properly in that mode. I'm getting ready to shut down for the day, so I'll check back with you in the morning. Good luck. --------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Run a startup repair plus a disk check, to do so when you start your computer press f8 repeatedly until it comes up with a list of options, click repair your computer and follow instructions until you see a new list, first click startup repair at the top and if the same problem continues after that repeat up to the new list and this time click command prompt, in command prompt type "chkdsk" then let it run and when its finished type"chkdsk /r" then repeat the last proccess "chkdsk /f" then chkdsk /e" then if it restarts let it, if not when they are all complete type exit and restart your computer. |

| Thank you both for your suggestions. Flavellee, I downloaded the two malware removal programs and ran the scans. They both quarantined and destroyed several files (mainly tracking cookies), but my computer has the same problem-- not responding a few minutes after startup. I also deleted the temp files. Liam7k, the startup repair didn't turn up anything. When I tried the disk checks in the command prompt box, I got the following messages: chkdsk/r - "Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected." chkdsk/f - "Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected." chkdks/e - "Invalid parameter - /e" Sometimes the "waiting circle" goes away if I wait a minute, but it always comes back when I try clicking on something else. Also, the screen sometimes just goes black. I have been using safe mode with networking to do the above scans, because the normal mode is so frustrating. |

| You appear to be using Windows Vista Home Basic(32-bit), so do the following in the order listed. -------------------------------------------------------- Go to Control Panel - User Accounts. Turn off or disable the User Account Control(UAC) feature, then apply the change. Restart the computer. Note: This step is needed to insure that HiJackThis will work properly without displaying a "host files" message. -------------------------------------------------------- Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4 After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it. Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files. After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load. Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis". Click "Do a system scan and save a log file". When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here. -------------------------------------------------------- |

| I don't have a recovery disk. Flavallee, I will post the log file here after that scan, but it will probably be tomorrow evening before I have a chance to do it. Long day working two jobs, and I don't really feel like spending more time on my computer tonight. Thanks for the tip! |

| Here is the log. I cannot install programs in safe mode, so I switched to normal mode and quickly installed it, but as soon as it finished the scan, the system froze again. :/ I switched back to safe mode with networking to run the scan. Let me know if you have other suggestions. Note: The first time I had forgotten to turn off User Account Control, so I did it again and edited this post with the new logfile. Sometimes it's hard to remember all the instructions when I can't have the browser open at the same time. | Besides having a massively-bloated startup load, it appears that you're using PC Speed Maximizer and possibly other "fix/clean/boost/optimize/tuneup/tweak" type utilities in that computer. The end result of using these type of utilities can be a damaged Windows operating system and some programs that no longer work and unexpected error/warning messages and general havoc. ------------------------------------------------------------ Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab. Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them. If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column. Submit those names here in a vertical list. Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

| This is the new log. Just so you know, I will be out of the country without Internet access for the next 16 days.
