Solved: Unable to connect to internet except when in safe mode with networking
Hi Everyone, hope someone can help. I turned on my laptop and realised I cannot connect to the internet at all by wireless or even through the ethernet cable. It shows local connection but is unable to connect to the internet. However, I can do so if I get to safe mode with networking and no other laptops in the house are exhibiting the same issues.

I have ran mcafee virus scan, malwareantibytes and spybot search and destroy and there is no virus, a few malwares which have all been removed. I have also tried running a diagnostic test and my laptop shuts down in the middle of it for no apparent reason. All the network drivers are also up to date and there are no windows updates to be installed either.

Windows firewall is not turned on either.

I'm running Windows Vista 64bit on a Dell Inspiron.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

HI etaf, Thanks so much for coming back to me. I will try this the minute I get home from work and update if that has fixed it.

i'm not an expert here - but if you look through the security forum, you will see a lot of recommendations for windows 7

The windows 7 firewall is considered adequate and especially if you are connected behind a router.
Have a read in our "general security" forum and look for the advice from our security gurus, they are identified with a gold shield next to their name

Several excellent free antivirus programs are available (But you should only ever have 1 on the PC at a time otherwise this can cause issues ).

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/secur...s/default.aspx

Avast
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

AntiVir
http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_...irus_d955.html

EST Nod 32 also gets a lot of very good reviews although it is not free
ESET NOD32
http://www.eset.com/home/

these Two programs are also recommended to be on the PC and can be on with any of the above antivirus programs.

Malwarebytes

superantispyware
