Hi vsteady,

I have had a similar problem, what I did was remove the bios battery for a few minutes. Put the battery back in, started it up again and bingo job sorted. There is a difference with my problem to yours though an underscore didn't appear on the screen, it was just black all the time. So the problems could be totally different.

The CMOS battery is not visible under any of the bottom access panels then
you most likely have to disassemble the laptop down to the motherboard removing the keyboard to
access the CMOS battery.

P.S found this on the internet, Hope it helps :

Apperently its pretty difficult, good luck if you attempt it.

The motherboard isn't a chip. Since it has Windows Vista, I assume it's more than a few years old. Replacing the motherboard is essentially replacing the entire computer except for the case and screen and leaves you with a still-old, used computer that may not work.

Save your money, and put it toward a new system.
